December 4, 2021 - Decanted for about one hour. Lighter and more red fruited than I expected for To Kalon. Still very nice with plenty of structure and chewy tannins. I suspect a longer decant would have helped.

November 7, 2020 - Nose: [59°] Ripe red and purple fruit, soft clean oak, dark dull graphite, soft spice, soft forest floor and something like a clean, fresh pond scent. [62°] Deep black currants show up with some time along with some floral notes if it weren't there earlier.

Palate: [61°] Cool blue and dark red fruits, pleasantly bitter tannin like steeped tea, bark skin, some oak as well as some dark bitter minerals. [62°] Rich black earth and dark graphite become more prominent with time. Fruits turn darker as well.

Attributes: Clear dark medium ruby. Dry with medium amounts of grainy, chalky tannin. Medium body with medium acidity. Good finish of at about 16-18 seconds.

Thoughts: Give this about 1.5 hour decant before enjoying. Time really deepened and darkened this some. The acidity on this compared to the '14 is much better. The acidity helps carry the flavors all the way to the end and helps keep this alive from the attack all the way through to the finish. I'm not sure if the '14 I had was just my bottle that might've been off but it's quite telling how much acidity can help a wine and its flavors. Great deep flavors of earth and dark fruits with a bit if bitterness to keep things interesting.

Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Slow-ox'ed in bottle for the duration of consumption over 2.5 hours, recommend decanting for at least 1.5 hours.

October 23, 2020 - The nose is full of black and blue fruit. It is velvety smooth with a nice amount of menthol to give a long lived mid-palate. I'd say 95+ as it is still just a baby.

December 7, 2019 - Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate (Estate near Meadowood): Beautiful lavender aromatics. Very rich, blue fruit, touch of earth, touch of graphite. Excellent purity. Tannins were perfect. Smooth as silk, a better balance than most 2015s. Excellent wine.

July 19, 2019 - Tasting at Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate (St Helena near Meadowood): Notes of blueberry preserves, creme de cassis, spice box and earthy dust make up a lovely rich nose. Super powerful black and blue fruit swim across the palate with outrageous levels of concentration and depth of flavor. All the goodness of the BTK site is reflected here, with a superior mouthfeel and exceptional tannin integration. Despite the huge fruit and crazy concentration that is reflective of the vintage, this shows restraint before heading over the edge and manages to find balance. Lots of spice and underlying herbal elements that will likely emerge more over time. Long, ripe and plush finish.
