April 8, 2019 - Napa April 2019; 4/6/2019-4/9/2019 (Napa, CA): Baking spices, cherry, not overripe, not underripe, perfect pick. Raspberry and cherry. Loved the mouthfeel on first sip, silky tannins and very juicy. Great wine. A notch above everything else on this trip.

November 6, 2018 - Opened 24h before this TN was written, sampled one glass, then recorked... it *really* needed the air! The wine is a lovely rich royal purple, limpid texture. On the nose the fruit flickers between sweet cassis and ripe black plums, with delicate touches of violets, wet gravel, perhaps a hint of licorice. The fruit tastes just ripe enough, yet is set off against enough acidity for control, with a beautiful structure and balance supported by polished tannins... the mineral-laden finish is endless. Barest hint of bitterness late on the palate actually contributes complexity. A fantastic effort from VHR. Today, 97 and already wonderful. But this will age for 15 years, and could hit 99 or 100 for me at peak.

My one bit of advice: this wine genuinely needed the 24h to slowly breath and relax. Even 3h after opening it was wound very tight and hard to enjoy.

October 20, 2018 - First time enjoying this wine. Aromas of dark fruits with flavors of blackberry, black cherry and a touch of smokiness. Some pepper in the background. Fine tannins with some grit. Smooth.

August 26, 2018 - VHR Vertical Tasting with Bruce & Heather Phillips (Oak Knoll, CA): Decanted for 3 hours. Served in flight with the '14 and '16. Another great wine in the making here, still all wrapped in tannin and baby fat. Lucious dark fruits, with the signature earth and perhaps some smokiness. Structure is all in place for continued development - I would not touch this until 2025.

July 26, 2018 - Redd (Yountville): Coiled-up red currant, red cherry liqueur, black cherry, spice, and peppercorn. Bound up pretty tight, with a spicy/peppery element to compliment the red (and black-ish) core fruit. The purity of fruit was very nice, though a Dana Hershey served beside it was more elevated by comparison. Nevertheless, this was a very nice wine, hindered only by youthful tension and grip that clamped down on the core fruit. Great acidity and structure here.

Give this another 4-5 years to fully come together. 94++ points after a few years to unwind a bit.
