April 18, 2024 - Blind Champagne Tasting (Basanti in San Juan Capistrano, CA (South OC)): April 2016 disgorgement. Lots of fresh apple, and it's very prominent while the wine was cold. I had called this as Grand Cellier as I wasn't getting the tangerine that is so much a signature of GCdO, but when this finally shed the chill, the tangerine rushed in, along with some pastry and pear. Finishes with flint and lime zest. Damn good again, but this vintage of GCdO always warms my heart.

March 18, 2024 - 80% Chard and 20% PN. Avoiding malolactic fermentation and aged in wood barrels and 600L casks. Effervescent with light pine, MacIntarsh apple, seamlessly woven, fresh with acidity. Anise appeared 30 min later, adding another layer of interesting complexity. It's still quite young and fresh. In a lineup against all the NM's, this Champagne is full of character and personality. Vilmart is a grower Champagne worth seeking out. 94 points.

July 13, 2022 - Still very fresh and youthful, with some tangerine and red berry, autumnal notes. Th mousse is a little subdued. Lovely.

April 30, 2022 - I really appreciate Russ bringing this over to the dinner we hosted. Very thoughtful, knowing I like Vilmart as I do. Have not had the 2012 in a few years, and I own a few of these but have been trying to let these see some age. Disgorged November 2016, with the typical 80/20 split of Chardonnay/Pinot Noir. Floral and lightly smoky. Bright tangerine, pear honeyed apple with a distinct candied citrus rind note. Juicy and fresh, creamy lime/orange finish. While I do love Coeur de Cuvee, I find the Grand Cellier d'Or to be more approachable and generous and even at 10 years old, this 2012 remains fresh and delicious. The 2013 of this cuvee was my wine of the year for 2021, and the 2012 is of similar high pedigree.

February 28, 2022 - Once again, Vilmart is glorious in 2012. Beguiling and complex. Sour orange…Manderinquat! Sweet brown spice. Long finish. I usually wait 14+ years on these, and while this could use a few more years, it’s already delicious.
