Community Tasting Notes 7

September 2, 2023 - This surprised me in quite a pleasant way. I opened it simply because I'm making room in my cellar for better stuff, and clearing out a few bottles here and there by "tasting" to my heart's content. This 100% petit verdot has been passed over on many occasions, to my benefit today.

The cork was pristine. Wine color is translucent red with a rusty-clear edge, implying some age. The nose is quite nice, with a spicy quality, plums, black cherries, and a floral presence right behind the fruit. There is nothing unpleasant here, to the contrary there is (surprisingly to me, I admit) much to like. On the palate, black cherries and baking spices with a hint of floral that I can't quite place. Violets, maybe? Tannins are still present but not overbearing, and are mostly experienced by a drying of the mouth after sipping. The finish is short-ish but enjoyable. This is a mature wine that has not yet become old, and still offers much to the taster. Under the right circumstances I will not be afraid to be adventurous in the future if a see a wine menu offering something like this. Fun.

October 27, 2020 - Purchased recently at half price: not usually the kind of thing I go for, but I was enticed by the discount and the fact that this is 100% Petit Verdot. An Italian Petit Verdot??? You don't get to try that every day!

Despite the fact that this varietal is known for its aggressive tannins, this wine was really ripe and fruity, soft and nearly tannin free. This grape's expression in Italy must be very different than in Bordeaux. To me, it tastes very New World in style with over-ripe sweet black fruits. Frankly, it reminds me of a California zinfandel without the spice. There is definitely some interesting earthy character, but it's a bit too grapey and juicy to my palate. I could see a lot of people liking this, but not my cup of tea (glass of wine).

February 24, 2020 - 100% Petit Verdot. Dark nose of ripe blackberry and violets. Full-bodied palate echoes the nose. Firm fine tannins and medium acidity. Quite the surprise from Tuscany where the “Supers” are often blends. Very approachable for this variety. A wonderful compliment to beef dishes and hard cheeses. Drink now through 2027.

June 29, 2018 - Totally respectable, but at least 10 bucks too expensive. Round, raw red and black fruit, nice caramel finish. Tastes young, could be a solid notch better in 3 - 5 years. Nicely crafted, not changing the world, interesting experiment with petit verdot. Very good.
