April 7, 2024 - The most structured of the trio of ‘14-‘16. Quite refined and polished if a bit closed at this point. Well balanced, poised, with fine pure red fruit notes and oak well judged. I’m optimistic about the rest of my bottles. Give this at least another 5yrs.

    April 6, 2024 - 2 hour decant
N: nice bordeaux perfume from decanter, in glass menthol, cassis, vanilla and tobacco leaf
P: as nose plus milk chocolate
The wine feels open with prominent but fine grained tannins. I like the attack and medium plus finish, the weak spot is the mid-palate which is too thin to make the wine stand out but which also makes it a great accompaniment to food.

April 5, 2024 - Classic Bordeaux with cassis, earthiness, medium tannins and soft acid. Very well balanced with medium - long finish.

Update: Opened up a bit on day 2, with some blueberry and black raspberry more prominent in the mouth. I don't see it improving markedly, for my taste, with years more aging, as some have suggested.

April 2, 2024 - One of my go-to Bordeaux at this price-point. Really rich, with deep black fruits. Excellent value. Held up extremely well on day #3, after vacuum seal.

February 25, 2024 - Opaque ruby. Mature red fruit with some woody notes but not overly oaky. Dark plum blueberry blackberry and a rather soft thick finish. Very likable but I feel there is something missing to elevate it further.

February 10, 2024 - Quite ripe and rich on the nose, with sweet blueberry and blackcurrant, plus some red fruit and violet in the background. In the mouth, it’s lush, plump, rather chunky and very ripe, with sweet blueberry dominating for now, although there is thankfully some crisper blackcurrant midpalate, before quite a long finish featuring tobacco notes on top of all the fruit. Quite surprising, in that it lacks the acidic crispness found in other Margaux 2016, leaving a rather stodgy sensation in the mouth. Still very young, so it could develop more nuances and less of the thick fruit. Quite hard work to drink now. Where’s the Margaux finesse?

This was very well-received on release and at 28 euros, seemed good value in view of all the praise, but I’m not convinced about the quality, nor about its future. The 2009 did taste similar at the same age and in the end, the lush fruit settled down without slipping into syrupy flavours, so fingers crossed. At least it isn’t over-oaked.

I suppose the problem is for me that it’s a neither-nor wine. It’s a former Cru Bourgeois aiming at achieving the same level of quality as a CC, which is admirable, but whether it’s the terroir or the winemaking, or both, for now it just tastes like a souped-up CB at a much higher price. The 2016 is a more concentrated, lusher wine than the 2009, without any real improvement, and costing a bit more. Not an estate I shall go back to anytime soon.

Not sure what score to give this.

January 1, 2024 - The wine has a lovely nose that is well-balanced, the ripeness of 2016 comes through beautifully, along with a smoky touch and tobacco at the end. Upon entering the mouth, it gives a round feeling of volume and is perfectly balanced with the nose. What I found as a minor downside is that it fades a bit at the end and especially leaves a lactic sensation in the mouth, which I don't immediately associate with 2016, but it's still very beautiful and now perfectly ready to drink."

December 10, 2023 - This has developed nicely since the three years I tried it thr last time. The blend of Merlot, CS and CF greatly blended.
Looking forward to revisit in a couple of years.
