January 6, 2017 - 1981 MOUNT EDEN VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS- 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc; this bottle of the regular release [as opposed to the reserve] showed beautiful maturity with tertiary, dried fruit notes of black currant, plum and black raspberry; the tannins were pretty stiff and close to dominating, but not; the finish had a huge shift toward more fruitiness and left a big smile on my face.

November 6, 2014 - Dunn Comparative Cabernet Tasting (Chez John Morris): Served double-blind, I guessed a 1982 Pauilliac classed growth. Gorgeous nose with sweet, fleshy red fruit, a lot of exotic spice, and some leafy tobacco, adding a nutty quality with air that reminds me of Thai peanut sauce. Mostly mature, the ripe, spicy, black fruit on the palate is soft and rich and expansive with just a touch of grip that gives it a lovely texture. Fabulous and WOTN against some tough competition.

July 26, 2008 - Opened with some old friends form the the West Coast.......the wine was from a great cellar and we open it fast and did not treat it how we should have because it was for a gathering. the wine was in excellent shape but had a heavy brett odor for the first 10 minutes until it blew off. Once it settled down the wine was still alive and it was filled with spicy berry fruits and cassis. The longer I waited the better it got. The wine style is classic old Cali and it was not built fruit foward. The mid palate had clay and dirt with some olive and cherry fruit. Finish was muted and this is why it got rated where it did but it was a very nice bottle of wine.

March 15, 2007 - Bottle had begun to leak, so was prioritized above another selection in the same box. Upon opening, the wine showed a disjoint nose of decay. After two hours open in the cellar (no decanting, just open), the red fruit had come back to the fore, framed by some tobacco notes and hints of madeirization. Overall, a very good performance, better than the last bottle, which was popped and poured. The air was helpful and the leaking had not yet gotten to the wine.

March 7, 1992 - Mount Eden Vineyards+2 Champagnes+1980 Fetzer Reserve Chardonnay (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Sweet fruit, lots of rich fruit, great potential, black berry fruit.
