January 12, 2024 - Stood Up for a day (which wasn't enough) and double decanted at 10am. A fair amount of very fine sediment I wish had settled more and some heavier sediment I was able to decant off.
This was drunk next to the '90 (which is a bit off) and the '04 which were so very similar. Very good Showing maybe at peak?
December 23, 2023 - Delicious but … hard to distinguish from a classic Bordeaux. Leather and chocolate and pencil lead.
December 16, 2023 - A perfect bottle. Bucket list for me, purchased at auction so unclear provenance, but got lucky. Gorgeous structure with balanced acidity and resolved tannins. Lovely earth and truffle on the nose, fruit still there but fading to the background. So smooth on the palate, a rarity that the palate matched the magnificence of the bouquet. On peak. Now-2031
June 12, 2023 - On the mild side but the bouquet is classical. Should be peaking out just now.
April 1, 2023 - Sassicaia continues to challenge me in many vintages. It is always a robust wine, with massive structure that takes effort to chip away. After one hour decanting the strength and austerity is undiminished. Paired with Sologne Venison with Radicchio, Black Truffle and Madeira Sauce, the wine had few rounded edges and kept up its steely black fruit guard throughout the evening. From time to time through chunks in the armor you could catch a glimpse of a perfumed substance shrouded in balsamic oak and currant but would just as quickly shut the broadly oaky gates.
It would be an exaggeration to say we became friends in the end but there was a respectful relationship established. There was a softness, but on the outside, with an impenetrable core at heart.
February 15, 2023 - Drank for the first time in 2021 and this wine impressed me.
Nose as floral and spicy as ever. The aromatic will evolve on tobacco.
The palate is still as silky as I remember, it is a very feminine and noble wine. The juice, deep, is kaleidoscopic: sometimes spicy, sometimes with a bright red fruit then came the tobacco and the dried roses. Great balance, very gently, the wine glides and coats everything it touches. The wine is really textured with a wonderful grain. Great finish, cold and intense at the same time on a saline length.
Great Sassicaia.
December 10, 2022 - Wonderful mature Sassicaia. In the zone right now. If you are lucky enough to own this, uncork it now.
June 11, 2022 - (BYO blind tasting)
Full, deep and impressive nose. Dark fruit, cigar, cedar and lovely iron minerality. Concentrated and complex.
Fullish palate. Austere, dense and very concentrated. Still youthful(!) Plum, black fruit, cedar, cigar box, plum and some beginning hints of meatiness. Massive structure. Very long. Very Bdx.
We started in super-second territory, but also considered Ornellaia or Sassicaia.
December 4, 2021 - Graphite, toast, very closed vs 96, 99 or 01. Some black olive and balsamic. Long finish but still very tight. The wine came from the winery directly. Not ready yet.
Detailed tasting experience refers to my 96 vintage note.
