August 22, 2019 - Tasted at Penfolds Magill Estate, Adelaide. 40 Vintages of Grange: There's an initial creaminess on the palate which no doubt is the prominent new oak showing through. Then it's power, power, power but its not disjointed. Plenty of everything in this wine, acid, tannin, fruit. But it (more than) just works. I think Irene Cara was referring to this wine when she sung 'Fame'!

April 30, 2019 - Sometimes Grange astounds with its beauty and complexity, but sometimes its just weird. This was one of those for me: an odd nose, big but a little gluey, a bit of VA, settles down over 40 minutes, but still not quite right. In the mouth, bing cherry pits, mocha, coffee grounds, quite rich and long, supple tannins, but, in the end, one dimensional. That said, I wouldn't throw her off the table; just fine with duck or quail, with a bit of berry on the plate

April 30, 2019 - Penfolds Grange dinner with Stephanie Dutton (The Musket Room in NYC): There's a few of these Granges that are just monsters that I imagine might live almost forever. This is one of those. It is intense and grips you right from the beginning. Lots of eucalyptus and menthol, meat and more savory notes, ripe blackberries, more herbal. With time I get some Indian spices. Every time I tried this wine it was different and interesting and intense. I look forward to seeing it in more of the real drinking window (it's till gotta be 20 years away from maturity). An old friend though and one that showed quite beautifully tonight.

March 31, 2019 - Third bottle, first tasting note. It's been the wine of the night on two occasions with some pretty heavy hitters but this time we tried it against a Sina Qua Non and a Chave Hermitage. All of similar age (the Sina Qua Non was youngest). Honestly, 7 out of 7 people just couldn't get away from he fact it was the most enjoyable wine on the table. Entrancing nose, sublime on the palate, really in a very good place. Seems like it will last a ling time still.

March 30, 2019 - Absolutely singing right now. Wish I had more. Velvety smooth tannins and complex layers of dried fruit and earthiness. Not the longest finish, but impressive nonetheless. paired with sous vide grilled rib steak. Has a decade left in the tank if, in MHO
