Community Tasting Notes 10

December 27, 2019 - Friday Tasting Group: "Killer Bar" (#06 for me) (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Per the contributor, Antonio Galloni, & MC2 Wines (cf. the 11/26/18 TN below), this COULD have been bottled as Amarone, but the producer opted to declassify it.

N: RIPE berries with spice, orange peel, & something I can't quite ID

P: Med body; Rndish entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by an astringent pucker which stays in contact with the init frt as it transitions into a LONG, BALANCED, tangy/SWT (45:55) finish to the few, firming dusty tannins. For now & making its 15th... min. 15.5% ABV; My EXC/EXC+ (92-95/100 using that metric). 93 pts Vinous (Galloni, 5/'17). From a producer new to me, but that I've since learned is HIGHLY regarded. [As of late Dec '19, wine-searcher shows several sources from $125-$180].

December 21, 2018 - Here I found an exotic bouquet, showing crushed strawberry, black cherry, wild herbs, a mix of dried red and blue florals, marine-inspired minerality, and crushed stone. On the palate, silky textures were given tremendous energy through zesty acidity with sweet and sour cherry, a twang of spice and bitter herbs creating a contrasting performance upon the senses. The finish was long with sweet spices and lingering acids creating a juicy experience as tart red berry fruit saturated the palate.

November 26, 2018 - Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): This is wine made entirely in the same way as the Amarone, but for whatever reasons related to the vintage doesn't quite hit the level that the family is expecting and thus gets 'de-classified' as it were into a Rosso del Bepi. Means slightly lower alcohol than an amarone year. Usually a bit lighter and balanced. To be honest, I quite liked this. Seems like a wonderful wine. Lots of darker black fruits, again those kindof spicy notes where it's almost like a sweet and spicy style. Very fresh. Nice to drink.
