June 9, 2023 - Dark red. Minerals, smoke and grilled meat on the nose. Light on its feet, some cherry, subtle spice and a touch of earthiness on the finish. Tannins have softened. Balanced acidity and interesting finish. Not big nor highly extracted.

July 21, 2022 - Red berries and forest notes on the nose. Opens with notes of dark cherry and plum, transitioning to notes of forest floor and white pepper. A lot going on here. But this is not quite as brambly as some other Raul Perez Mencias I have had. It is still fairly tannic, and I think the tannins probably need more time to resolve. Well constructed, but I think this needs more time. 14% ABV.

March 20, 2020 - I might be stingy with this rating, and one of the early highlights of my COVID-19 journey of solidarity with my Italian and Spanish friends. This is a hell of a mencia -- very structured and layered. Perhaps a hint of old barrel when first opened but that quickly integrated. Very rich and deep and all around superb. Eric Guido's notes pretty much align with mine and I suspect I bought the last bottle he had bought in his prior life! One of the best mencia's I've had and I'm loving this varietal.

September 27, 2019 - Here I'm finding mineral-infused raspberry and fresh blueberry offset by smoky minerals, dusty dried florals, lemon zest, and cool-toned sweet herbs. It' soft textures are given life through vibrant acids as spice and saline-minerlaity saturate the senses, leaving hints of youthful tannin which slowly mount, creating a bit of an austere expression. The finish is long and structured, with brambly dried red fruits, spice, savory herbs and zesty acids, promising years of positive development in the cellar. This will only get better with time. The hard part will be keeping our hands off until it's completely mature.

August 2, 2019 - Violet color. Nose earthy, some red fruits.
Palate earthy, mineral, red fruits -- red cherries. Hints of chalk.
Still young to drink now but a wonderful drink, balanced and hinting at great complexity for the future. 93 pts
