February 9, 2021 - Tasted double blind. This wines shines bright with its elegance and weightlessness but it doesn‘t have the depth of great vintages. My guess was a little bit older Pauillac due to the strong graphite component but the airiness and femininity screamed Margaux. A lot of joy to drink but not in the same universe as 1996. 94 points.

TN: Beautiful and intense graphite minerality on the nose and palate. Fresh red berries, and floral on the nose, with a more darker fruit imprint on the palate. Very good precision with an overall medium+ aromatic intensity but only medium complexity. This has quite a weightless feel and is very harmonious although the minerality is the dominant component. Perfectly integrated acidity with very fine tannins. Medium length.

Decanting: Decanted for roughly two hours which seemed fine and followed over several hours. Another glass the next day shows little change.

    Glass: Zalto Bordeaux

February 4, 2021 - Wow oh wow. Absolutely superb. Double decant, one hour. Nose insane, wild evocative, thrilling mind filling. On both Nose and palette were cassis, mineral, fresh cedar, forest floor, but also Asian spices, a little gunpowder and some sort of pixie dust. Very responsive to food and temperature - in a negative way. Basically couldn’t pair it with anything as despite being rich and glorious it was acutely independent and refused to tango with anything other than the blandest protein. A solo act, encore!

December 24, 2020 - Has not developed in the right direction since last tasted in 2011. Nice on the nose, but the fruit lacks a bit of charm and elegance, and there are some disturbing disjointed components as well. Of course I am picky here, given the label. OK on the finish, but not the depth and length expected from a premier cru classé. In a bad phase? 93?

November 29, 2020 - This wine had no defects and was drinking well but I share the sentiment that first growths in lesser years are often not worth the price. We had it at the French Laundry as befits a bottle of this stature And maybe the COVID-required outside dining affected our enjoyment but I’d say drink up and pick something else for that special occasion.

(Chateau Margaux) Very floral nose with a nice underlying minerality and some toasty, charred oak. Also some black cherry, cassis, grilled nuts blueberry and wet earth. Great concentration on the palate with a silky texture and wonderfully complex hints of nuts and anise in the midpalate. This very good on day one but really developed compelling complexity on day 2. Flamboyant yet cerebral at the same time.
