March 22, 2019 - On the technical sense, this one gets a 93.8 from me. I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for aged Beringer Cabernet PR's. This one had a little bit of a black cherry and mushroom nose with a hint of Ash. However, the entry was very lovely with stone-ground black cherry fruit, fig, very ripe tobacco. The middle has ample weight and building acidity. Finish is lovely still with bright acidity and complexity. Would have thought this was a 2004. These 1997's have definitely impressed all across the board, not just with Beringer. I think I probably got to this one after it had been open about 1 or 2 hours. I think it is the right time to drink. If you have some of these in your cellar, you better get started!

December 31, 2018 - Brick red color. Floral nose with hints of dry fruit. The tannins are still present, but not as gripping and a little dry. Good finish.

December 25, 2018 - Back to the days before Napa cabs became caricatures - this 21-year-old cabernet shows restraint, nuance and sophistication. Years to go, but this magnum had been with me for about 18 years and it seemed like the right time, paired with prime rib Christmas dinner with family and friends. Reticent and restrained nose of black fruit, eucalyptus and spice. In the mouth, soft yet spicy. Blackberry and black cherry and menthol. Still prominent fine tannins. This wine could go another decade or two. Really quite beautiful on a snowy and cold Christmas day. The other red wine on the table was a 1996 Calon Segur, which was classic Bordeaux and quite wonderful. The two together were a brilliant experience.

September 2, 2018 - Better than 11 years ago! Still had the $79 sticker on it and of course, I paid 10% less, like everyone else here. Blue and black fruit, including black plum showing up front then some spice, oak, mint, and stone lingering nicely. Excellent balance and a real treat for my Dtr born in'97 (did she care? no...). On plateau.
    Now-2020.
