November 5, 2010 - Although the score is the same, the wine was quite different from the wine I had two years ago. The, it tasted decidedly New World to me, this bottle was much more Old World, much more similar to primitivos I have had from Puglia -- some of my favorite "simple" wines. Nice balance, a little light on the finish, but I enjoyed the hell out of this one. I think the extra years helped.

June 6, 2010 - Really did not care for this Zin. Not all that good.

July 12, 2009 - Alcohol on the nose with plum. Heavy weighted fruit, prune, allspice, cloves, licorice. Heat on the finish. Drank w/o food but would be good with BBQ or cheese. At its peak now.

November 26, 2008 - I am not all that familiar with California wines, and so I approach them pretty much wide-eyed. This was a decent bottle. Fruit very upfront without much tannin. Although this can be a recipe for disaster, not so with this wine. It was well balanced in its own right. Not very structured, but the wine had a taste that seemed "typically Californian" (or certainly New World) to the extent that I can use such a term accurately. You would never mistake this wine for a Primitivo, the name applied to Italian wines made from the same grape. Part of this may be due to the Petite Sirah and Syrah in the mix. Nevertheless, it was very enjoyable. I think drdebs (TN below) reaction is closest to my own. I have another bottle, and a few more Calif zins, and I am looking forward to them more now than I did before I had this bottle.

March 15, 2008 - I liked this a lot. Dark plum in color. Aromas of black cherry, allspice, and cedar. Flavors are cherry, baker's chocolate, and pepper. 14.2% alc/vol. Nice acidity at the core, very food friendly. This zin feels and tastes more old fashioned and restrained--just the way I like them and remember them from the 90s when they were my favorite. Note: 3 days after first opening, and sitting with a cork in it on the counter, the wine is smooth, with more notes of clove, cinnamon, allspice, and baker's chocolate. Less pepper. Suggests it will open up nicely and continue to develop over the next 12 mos.
