April 22, 2021 - Incredibly lucid, stem aromatics wow wow wow! Mind bending balance on offer, sweetness and austerity. If this isn’t Pinot Noir perfection, then it’s Goddamn close. (4414/5281)

October 23, 2019 - Part of a 2016 DRC tasting, a vintage that impressed with how approachable it already was, purity, elegance and versatility. For me, the La Tâche scored best, followed by Richebourg and Romanée-Conti – although the latter may well surpass the La Tâche in the long run. Corton came in last. Montrachet, Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux were not produced commercially that year and older vintages offered instead.

Darker fruit than La Tâche. Ripe red to borderline dark cherry – although versatile and changing. Initially not all valves were open I found, but opened up quickly in the glass. Mineral aromas sit humbly in the background, but provide a contextual frame for the fruit core. Floral high notes complete the picture. Pure and terroir driven. Hardly noticed, but present were secondary aromatics of leather and cedar wood. Powerful. Lots of acidity reigned in my slightly grainy tannins. A bold structure and should clearly improve with aging. Would not be surprised to see this surpass both Richbourg and La Tâche with sufficient bottle age.

October 23, 2019 - DRC 2016 – what survived the frost: Intro: Another great vintage. At this early stage I slightly prefer the 2016s over the 2015s at the same point last year as the former show a bit more open and complex (due to a less dominant fruit core). Out of the 5 reds, the Richebourg is my #1 with its early charms and seductiveness. The La Tache is the most complex and shows a tad more open than the Romanee Conti, which is so dense and packed that it very likely will reach higher highs than all other wines. The RSV also boasts the fantastic structure and finesse without the incredible depth of the big 3.

TN: Dark berries, loads of strawberries, strawberry candy, sour cherries, rose hip, wet slate, some herbs. A bit less complex than the La Tache as the fruit is much more intense and dominant. The highlight is the precision of all the aromas. The signature weightless, luxurious structure with the finest possible tannins and a perfect balance and harmony with a well-integrated acidity. Incredible length, this just goes on and on and on. Even more than the Richebourg and La Tache (and miles above the RSV). Nose 95/96 points (a bit more closed than the La Tache/Richebourg) getting better and better with time, palate 96/97 mainly thanks to the precision and structure. My guess: this can easily reach perfection in 20 or 30 years.

June 28, 2019 - Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2016, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Sit-down tasting with Aubert of the 2016 lineup. OK, the La Tâche was darn good, but then there is this wine. Precocious display of bright red fruit aromas with Asian five spice, leading seamlessly to the same (or more) on the palate. Oh by the way, you can't miss the structure but it is in near-perfect step with the fruit, showing silky tannins and bright acidity. Everything here is so bright and lively with even more complexity already vs La Tâche, unfolding, closing, opening again and again. This might even surpass 2015. Monumental 98-99 point potential.

March 9, 2019 - On another level vs the rest of the DRC line up. Very supple and already nuanced. While young and ultimately mostly closed this was still giving up red candy, red berries, streaks of darker fruits, violets and a young green note. This wine already has a depth to it. 2 hours later after tasting back vintage DRC the true greatness of this wine comes out. Also the youth - the green note much more pronounced. Obviously the play here is to hold for a very long time.
