March 17, 2019 - Wow exceptional
March 17, 2019 - Awesome cab very much a joy
January 1, 2019 - 8 hour double decant decant. A lot of sediment in neck. Deep purple, still a young wine. Long decant really helped flesh out this wine, lovely licorice and vanilla notes. Terrific balance, very impressive,
December 26, 2018 - 5 hr decant. Overall, enjoyed the wine and tasted periodically while decanting - opened up nicely after 3rd hr. Great floral nose with almost a more fruit-forward, but grounded-in-Bordeaux style. On the mouth, black and red fruits continue - acidic and not overpowering - meshed well with roast beef. Finish was longer than other reviews made it appear, but the whole experience was quiet and nuanced - unlike many other Napa cabs today. Unclear how this may evolve and if this has the age-ability compared to other Mondavi reserves, but happy to have tried it at this stage in its life cycle.
December 23, 2018 - At this point in its evolution, 92 pts. It is still young, youthful, and grippy. I suspect this will get much better with another 5 yrs on it to put on weight and soften. If drinking now, 60 minute decant at a minimum is recommended.
December 15, 2018 - Aromas of cola and dark fruit. Grippy tannins, dark fruit, blackberry. Could definitely benefit by some decanting. Long finish, goes on and on.
November 16, 2018 - Brought some skepticism into tasting this as Mondavi is such a big company, mass producer nowadays but I have to say the pedigree of the fruit off To Kalon really came through with blackberry, red fruit, violets, fennel... soft mouthfeel, a real nice femininity to the wine which is something my wife and I both enjoy. Quite good and given it opened up in the decanter and got better through the evening I think this will benefit from a couple more years in the bottle.
September 30, 2018 - 93 CS, 6CF, 1 PV
Double decanting. Drank over 2 hours.
Brooding and deep. Youthful. Compact rim.
Very flamboyant aromatic profile. Explosion of ripe berry fruits from all shades. Sun-dried tomato signifying that California sunshine. A bit of anise and milk chocolate undertone.
Structurally sound. Ripe tannin, med plus to full body, med plus acidity, dry. Very Napa with that unabashed fruit forward profile. Ripe cherry, blackberry with some blueberry in the background. Star anise, nutmeg, and thyme. Slightly chocolatey and definitely new cedar wood. Quite a mouthful. However the finish is rather short comparing to 2013 Opus One tasted alongside.
This is a very commendable effort and very Californian. I have enjoyed this reserve bottling from Mondavi for some time. This wine will peak in 5 years and remain in the optimal drinking condition for the next 10 years. Not a long distance runner but will give you enough pleasure. So, who cares? 91+
September 14, 2018 - I think this wine is all about expectation. If you are used to Beckstoffer to Kalon fruit intensity, that is not what one finds in this bottling. Instead, it is a very round left bank Bdx blend, with the PV and cab franc showing through a bit more strongly than the 4% and 8%, respectively might suggest. It was very well made, a likely fan favorite in a large group setting, but not a flavor bomb or particularly powerful cuvee. Frankly, it lands quite a bit softer than I'd expect for a 2014. I liken this wine to Bevan's ontogeny, although I prefer that bottling between the two.
July 21, 2018 - 4 hour decant. Had high expectations for this wine but was quickly disappointed. Nose was very light with just a touch of dark fruit. Taste was muted and nothing special. Near the end of the bottle it started getting tart. Need to stick with Beckstoffer when doing To Kalon
