April 18, 2019 - Still strong, drank after a 2 hrs decant, nose is a little contained but on the palate it's super strong. delicious nebbiollo
March 6, 2019 - Cork is fully saturated as of 3/6/2019--tasted one other bottle about two months ago where the cork was also fully saturated.
The wine started off pretty one-dimensional. Leathery with bright notes of berries and a mineral aftertaste. Still pretty heavy on the alcohol, so we let the bottle breathe.
After an hour, the nose switched to jam, tobacco, and melon. More tobacco on tasting with earth coming through. Berries deepened and sweetened--raspberry and cherry are my best guesses, with a little bit of melon like the nose. Long finish, ending with a nice chalky-minerality. Very nice wine with some more life left in it, so long as the cork holds out!
December 1, 2018 - Leaky cork, but the wine was beautiful and open. Delicious dark berries, tar, earth, and floral notes on the nose and layered palate with fine tannins and a long finish. Paired beautifully with the delicious wild boar tenderloin at Gaetano's.
November 16, 2018 - This magnum 2000 Riserva was the WOTN at my daughter’s 18th birthday dinner party. Double decanted for 2 hours and than 1 hour of resting in bottle. Accompanied main course of game ragout. More tannic and fresh fruitiness than I expected. Could easily lasted another 5 years in cellar. Deep and layered complexity, tar & orange peel and the typical Nebbiolo scent what you will recognize instantly. Color is still deep, though fading towards the color of red brick. Powerful, yet nuanced and balanced wine. Just wow!
October 8, 2018 - Decanted for one hour. Still deep violet red. Similar to first encounter in 2010, but clearly more expressive now. Red cherry fruit really prominent on the nose, with tar, floral notes, vanilla (oak) and pepper. Almost heavy fruit on entry is kept light enough by the fine tannins and good acidity. Licorice/anise notes after midpalate as the fruit flavors recede a bit. Bit of heat on finish.
June 20, 2018 - 4th time I have had this wine. I opened and decanted it about 2 hours before the offline dinner at an Italian restaurant. This was the first year that Spinetta made a Barolo and I recall that the experts gave it high marks (WS98, Gambero Rosso 3*, WA94). Some bricking around the edges of this crimson wine. Aromas of asphalt and a little vanilla. It has softened over the years and is more rounded now. Notes of forest floor, earthy red berries and dried mushrooms with some burnt oak on the finish. Integrated and supple tannins. 94 points.
May 19, 2018 - Same notes as in 2014: 11/28/2014 -
Acquired new and cellared since. Truly an awesome Barolo. Consistently wonderful whenever tasted. Fruit is a bit more bright than many Barolos but ends with the tar/cigar which makes Barolo so unique. Fully mature and has a few years left.
April 22, 2018 - Perfect Wine with a nice age.
Got better during the evening, so it has still power
But no tanin.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
February 19, 2018 - Decanted and drank over next 2 hours. Really pleasantly surprised about this wine. It's in a good place right now, showing some age, but with a few years left. On the nose there is candied dark cherries with some meatiness--like homemade salumi--and fennel. It is perfectly balanced with decent acidity, well-integrated tannins, depth and concentration. Alcohol at 14.5% is not too high. Old-world style of Barolo that may not be great when it's young, but that is fabulous with 20 years of age. Gentle yet complex and interesting on the palate.
I want to second what vinoviking wrote earlier about the cork. Mine was soft and reaching it's limits. It broke when removing and was stained to near the top. Better to drink this soon.
November 25, 2017 - Aperto circa 3 ore prima di servirlo. Inizialmente molto ridotto, si apre prima su note terrose e terziarie, di funghi, tabacco e sottobosco. poi iniziano molto lentamente ad emergere sentori di frutta secca, prugna e ciliegia soprattutto, ricamate di spezie dolci ed echi di note tostate. Il carattere fruttato è più evidente all'assaggio, dove la struttura importante si intreccia con una certa dolcezza polposa. Tannini fitti e vellutati. Finale davvero molto lungo.
