  August 13, 2023 - Tasted a lineup of Schist, Granite and Iron. At this point I was getting quite tipsy and therefore didn't make notes, but the Granite was my favorite, although I liked all three. The wines were more intense and dark and brooding than I remembered them when I tasted later vintages, and had typical syrah notes of blood and iron. Would be curious to see if memory serves me right.

  June 4, 2023 - Gareth's N Rhone vs SA Syrah; 6/3/2023-6/4/2023 (La Cabotte): This was decent but my gosh we opened it too young. Too much of its qualities are to be admired rather than enjoyed at this stage. Those smart enough to fill up the truck when Berry's had this on offer should be feeling pretty pleased with themselves, but also don't take it out of storage yet.

  June 1, 2023 - Syrah Battle: Northern Rhone vs South Africa (Cabotte): Magnum, decanted around two hours. For the first time tonight I got the feeling that the wine was a little young, but there was still a lot to enjoy. Raw, pure dark fruit on the bright nose. I detected a touch of heat on the palate, and enjoyed the classic Syrah notes of blood and iron and the powdery, cocoa-like tannins.
