April 30, 2021 - 3 days in Napa: Arkenstone, Memento Mori, Maxem, The French Laundry, Christopher Tynan, Kinsman, Harlan, Vice Versa, Accendo, Fairchild, Macdonald, and a truckload of others (Napa): A chocolate cream and vanilla bean dream that saturates the entire mouth with creamy oak, massively luscious dark fruit, chocolate syrup, and alcohol. This behaved very much like the Realm Crane we had the evening prior at TFL. Gobs of really ripe fruit hammering away at the palate with so much excess that it becomes overwhelming for me. It’s an Applebee’s Long Island Iced tea of wine, with so much going on that it is hard to keep track of what to actually focus on. If anything, this needs a handful of years to hopefully sort itself out.

24 hours later, a revisit on this bottle certainly showed its ability to relax on the booze a bit more, but it had essentially collapsed under the weight of its own fruit. It was heavy and sluggish. Perhaps there was a window of excellence that occurred between when we opened it the night before and then after 24 hours, but I surely missed it somewhere along the line. For those holding bottles, continue to do so. Opening the Absurd at this stage seems exceptionally hasty. Give it 5+ years and hope its ripeness doesn’t hold the rest of the wine hostage forever.

April 24, 2021 - Big nose of dark fruit and minerality classic for Stags Leap! Has to be significant Petite Verdot with dark ink in glass. Fruit is giant, tannins still big but developing. Dark berries, limestone, spices and peppers! Phenomenal bottle, still has years of drinking! Big Cali juice!

September 25, 2020 - Drank alongside a Hobbs To-Kalon and a Saffredi (Italian Super Tuscan Bordeaux blend). The Realm had, by far, the brightest and sweetest fruit flavors in a New World style. Enjoyed it immensely, even if this isn't my favorite profile.

June 22, 2020 - Decanted a magnum for a special celebration. Tasted when the bottle was opened and it was a bit tight. Poured 3 hours later and it was fabulous. Smooth and everything you might expect from this wine. It only got better and better as the evening progressed.
