Community Tasting Notes 4

August 4, 2020 - Lean mean herbacious machine. Tastes more like a Syrah Carmenere blend than Syrah Merlot. More medium in body than anticipated. Thoroughly enjoyed, the the palates falls just short enough to keep this in the 89-90 range.

May 21, 2018 - Syrah and merlot, all dried farmed. The wine is rustic and shows under ripe blueberry notes. Ripe black fruit, herbal, mineral components as well. The wine is fresh and easy drinking. Really refreshing, and pleasant. Daniella runs the vineyard, her husband makes the wine. alcohol, acid and tannins are all in line at medium. Tannins are up front, thin, soft, but lingering.

May 21, 2018 - The south part of the Central Valley. Last part of the dry coastal range. 100 year old vines and all dry farmed. Only rain water. The winery was 200 years old and they grafted the French varieties on it. Apparently this wine was first made for the son and his party as just fresh and flowery. And easy to enjoy. Acidity and allot of fruit is the goal. Fun stuff. 12 months in oak. I assume no knew.

October 12, 2017 - Wildly herbal and intensely savoury – a wine with Chilean character through and through. Though Gillmore does age this Syrah/Merlot blend in second use barrels, the viticulture and winemaking is still focused very much on freshness and sense of terroir (and it shows). Varietal characteristics intertwine with unmistakable notes of Chile to provide a tasting experience full of intrigue. Herbs – eucalyptus, sage, bay leaves – were at the forefront on the nose, combining with pine and red fruit to give a sense of wild berries in the forest. Birch/cedar, gunpowder, and a hint of rubber all came forward before the wine gave off an oddly specific soy sauce note. With some time, bolder fruit emerged by way of raspberry, blackberry, and plum, though the bottle still leaned heavily to the savoury side. Touches of olive, mushroom, and charred wood made appearances before the wine finished off in a blend of pepper and spice. It seemed to have an overall umami sense, like Japanese cuisine in liquid form; the alcohol was a bit hot, but otherwise the mouthfeel was fairly smooth. I was admittedly left a little conflicted on how I felt about it on a personal level, but it was hard to deny the quality, complexity, and intrigue – worth a try to decide for yourself!
