August 16, 2021 - Brought this to my mom and dad, tried with Coravin, they liked it very much so drank with steak and lamb grilled. Drank alongside the remaining 1978 Beycheyvelle and the 1982 Rauzan Segla from his cellar which I made notes on again. Left a bit after drinking two thirds with Coravin so they can enjoy a glass again another day. Interesting to see their reaction to a completely different style of wine than what they are used to. I now need to leave the rest of my Chaupin 16 alone to age as that will be much better in 5-10 years but after 30 min of air, this is super enjoyable now. Lots of red fruit and garrigue. PERFECT with Lamb chops. 93++

July 17, 2021 - Delivers the fruity/spiciness you want from CdP, though it borders on medicinal, with a little bit of heat in the finish. I’ve tasted better vintages. hopefully it straightens out or it will become a wine I open for sweet-toothed members of my family at BBQs

July 7, 2021 - 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape 99/100 point wine taste-off (and a couple of pirate Rhone wines): Following the theme of modernity, the Chaupin was one of the most California wines in the lineup. Powerful blackberry and dark plum work well with a blast of black licorice to push and flex the Chaupin into a brawny but appealing showing. The finish goes on and on (but not as long as its VV big brother). Some traditionalists will say this lacks some finesse, and they might not be completely wrong. However, this is a well-made wine that competed well in the lineup; especially QPR-wise, the price of admission here is especially compelling by comparison.

June 21, 2021 - Father’s Day present to myself. Coravin taste and so good I drank slowly over 2 days. Great pairing with variety of food over 2 dinners. Beautiful Dark Purple core with crimson rim. Aroma floral and mainly red fruit but it’s still young and holding back even with aeration. Lovely mouthfeel and classic Chaupin flavor, red fruit like strawberry and currant and some garrigue it’s my favorite vintage of this that I’ve tasted so far (vs ‘08, ‘12 and ‘15). It’s light on the mouth yet concentrated if that makes sense. Fine tannins and good structure tells me I’m drinking it too soon but the enjoyment says I’m not. Still a 94 for me, potential 96 (Vielles vines from this producer in this vintage is more intense and likely to be a 98 pointer in time). Plan: Wait another 2 years, then drink one every other year for next two decades unless someone sees this and persuades me to open another sooner….

June 10, 2021 - Wow! Can’t believe this is a 100% Grenache wine. Exceeded my expectation what a Grenache can deliver without help from darker varietals (syrah or mourvedre)! Jeb D. is on the money.

In general, 2016 vintage is magical for CDP wines as well as for Alban wines (more notes will be posted) as their tannins are super-fine, rich ripe fruit flavor and sweet floral tone on the nose. The closest Grenache from CA to Janasse Chaupin (or its Vieilles Vignes as it has 10% syrah) is Alban Grenache Estate which has 20% syrah blended. Hence, this speaks loudly for Janasse Chaupin and how did they get blue fruit tone into the wine? 100 years old vines on sandy soil?

2016 Janasse Cuvee Chaupin is absolutely enjoyable, elegant and harmoniously balanced with beautiful dark color juice (ahem wine)!

Bouquet: Fairly aromatics with sweet/candy, ripe rich red and blue fruits intermixed aroma with hints of Asian spice and bouquet garni.

Palate: Weightless yet full bodied ripe red (cherry) and dark/blue (blackberry) fruits flavor intermixed with subtle cocoa/leather and herbs.

Texture: Seamless super-fine tannins with good acidity masked under juicy rich fruit flavor; yet it is velvety.

My recent project is to experience 100% Grenache wines from the 2016 vintage but there ain’t many out there to get hold of. The project involves Pierre Usseglio Mon Aieul, Alban Pandora (I think Alban is the only major super-star out there making 100% Grenache in CA) and Horsepower Sur Enchalas (but stylistically so distinctly different from all others) – will post my notes over time.

This wine may gain more concentration and the nose become more aromatics with more time in the cellar and may hit 99+. Factoring QPR and blue fruit tone in 100% grenache, this is a solid 97+!

    Keywords: Balance, Rich, Delicious, QPR

    Scoring range: 97-99

Pretty much anything but I like big southern rhone wines with pasta dishes with red meat sauces. Also pairs well with roast turkey and chicken.
