May 14, 2021 - Another wine from Blue Apron! Interestingly this winemaker's main job is to manage the vineyards for a number of major wineries. The winery claims, then, that he often gets the first pick of the grapes as a result. The wine itself is an intriguing blend of 47% Petit Syrah, 47% Syrah and 6% Merlot from various small vineyards in California's Sierra Foothills.

Inky dark ruby in color, it has a completely opaque core that extends almost completely to the meniscus; this is the wine equivalent of staring at the event horizon of a black hole. Rather aromatic, it speaks forth with a pleasant mixture of dark fruit, oakiness, black pepper and even a bit of cedar in the nose. Upon sipping, one is met with a full-bodied and rather tannic wine with moderately high acidity. The high alcohol content makes it simultaneously smooth and beefy. The flavor is full of blackberry and black pepper overlaying some definitively earthy tones. There is also a hint of ripe cherry and a bit of black plum in there that later pokes it head into the mix. The finish is quite long and dry, starting off with ample blackberry from which plum emerges, and they gradually fade away together.

This is a big beefy wine! It's a bit much to take on its own, but I can see this pairing fantastically well with a big, juicy steak. One of the other reviewers recommended a cheeseburger with this and I am inclined to agree. If this wine were a beer it would be an imperial stout!

January 10, 2019 - I probably overrated this wine the first time around, at least based on this bottle. Has the flavor profile and intensity of a good CdR in a solid year. Still not sad I bought it even if the price was closer to $20 than $10.

January 1, 2019 - Really tasty wine and an excellent QPR buy. Nicely structured syrah-dominant blend with solid blue-tinged fruit. Had it on the same night as a 2015 Machete and while it didn't quite have the same depth, we actually found this wine more interesting. Will definitely buy again.

August 1, 2018 - A big kitchen sink blend based on Syrah. Smells interesting Andrew notes. Soft and supple, easy going. If its $10 it works. From a vineyard management company with some blue chips under their belt.
