September 24, 2020 - Deep hue of blood red with very high optical density and medium minus reflectivity that shows heavy diffusivity. Strong aromas of woodsy plum, cherry pit, and bramble that soars above light tobacco and forest floor spices. Hints of meatiness lie behind the frontal nose. Somewhat dark and brooding of an aromatic profile, but in an inviting way. Medium plus body on the palate with good acidity and a very dry and tannic framework that provides for a grippy and firm texture. Not shy at all, this shows significant structuring and power. Flavours of mixed red and black berry fruit covered in oak spice and tobacco on the attack. Medium intensity and complexity at this point. Things gain tension at midpalate as some plum and rose pedals add in, along with some tart cherry and forest floor notes. A touch of saline hits on the final transition, which leads into a very light intensity of dusty cherry, plum, and dark roasted coffee. Short finish with a dry and firm tannic character as intensity of flavours fall off quickly and leave a touch of warmth. Excellent balance overall, and mostly very strong intensity and medium complexity.
This is an excellent value wine, made in a powerful, modern way. Still, a sense of Tuscan flair goes along with a goodly amount of oak that borders on obtrusive (but stays just on-side for me). If you are looking for a big, robust, oaked red with some sense of tension and interest, this is great. Not loads of depth, but enough for those times when a comforting, spicy, bold bottle of red hits the spot. Definitely can decant this for an hour or so, and would seem to be suitable for the cellar for another several years at least. Nice! -

September 19, 2020 - Appearance: Pale rim. Deep ruby core. No obvious sediment. Medium, slow-moving legs (14% alcohol).
Nose: Medium-high intensity. Notes of sour cherries, leather, cranberry. Maybe a bit of cured meats and even a little milk chocolate.
Palate: High tannins, high acid, high alcohol. Notes of cranberry and red fruits in general, anise, maybe some pine and chocolate. Decent complexity and balance, though the finish is a little tart.
Food pairing: Would go nicely with pretty much anything Italian (we had veggie lasagna soup). -
