April 14, 2019 - CBCC opening dinner. My wine

This stood out for its impeccable balance. This is dark and brooding. I love Outpost wines. I find them to be the greatest value among the Thomas Rivers Brown portfolio. Large crushed blackberry fruit on the nose. The in mouth feel is soft and velvety, however it is on the finish that this wine shines as the fruit and tannin are in near perfect balance with lingering texture that found me chewing.

March 2, 2019 - Wow. Terrifically pure and beautiful fruit on the nose that carries over throughout. Beautiful color, dark but not ridiculously so. This wine is lush, delicious and open for business . Almost like a peaking Rutherford or Yountville Cabernet, but without the wait. This was a PnP., Very well balanced.

This the first 2015 Outpost I've opened and, while I am sure it will improve with more time in the bottle, I certainly don't regret popping one tonight.

    TRB: Very well done, sir.

August 23, 2018 - This warm and ripe Cabernet blend seems a bit superficial to me right now - it's pleasing and likable, but it's also a little soft. Drinking this now is a little like watching Draymond Green his freshman year at Michigan State: the kid is a little pudgy and lacks an outside shot, but he has a work ethic and a knack for the ball. The question then was: how far can he go? The question is the same now as to this wine - and I can't quite tell at the moment.

Ruby red in color, full (almost milky) in body, and nose of cherry pie, anise, and baking spices, with a hint of warm straw. Tastes of boysenberry, milk chocolate, and vanilla, with a soft and lingering finish. 14.7% alcohol. Blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 23% Cab Franc. Decant at least an hour, since this deepened with air.

This is the first Outpost I've been able to follow at home, and I came away a little mixed. It has beautiful fruit (and is almost top heavy with it) - but I'm not sure if it has the tannin or acidity to develop into something more compelling. In TRB I trust (usually), so I'll cross my fingers that this develops over another year or two. I agree with csimm, though, that this deserves more time: the potential is there; now it just needs to slim down and work on that jump shot...

June 2, 2018 - Napa Cabernets + SQN + others (Home): Served next to the 2015 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon (which I preferred ever so slightly – mainly for its elevated frame and grip). Purple and black core fruit, with black currant, black soil, chocolate chunk, and spice. I’m always a fan of this wine, and the 2015 vintage shows that this wine continues on its trajectory on being a solid performer year after year. It’s not the most complex of all the wines out there, and I probably find it to be a little less compelling than the 2014 version, but it has great flavor, wonderful textural, good purity of fruit, and some nice unctuous and accessible flavors that keep you coming back for another sip. Drinking fine now, but I’d wait another year to let it gain an even better glide.
