June 3, 2020 - A year ago this wine needed 4 hours of decanting to coax the tannins into line. This time 'round that all happened in about 2 hours and with a big improvement in clarity, too, as if a veil was pulled off and the dark red and blue fruit snapped into focus. There is a smoky note here along with the Crane minerality that I found satisfying after some air time. Needs a few more years of slumber, hopefully continuing to hone its precision. 95+

January 9, 2020 - I was bit surprised that this wine came across tannic and with heavy alcohol bite on the initial approach. Took about two hours to dissipate, but eventually the sweet blueberry fruit, with mineral notes, lead pencil and spice shown through. A somewhat atypical bottle from alpha omega, in my limited experience with this winery. Fortunately, I have two more to lay down for later

June 8, 2019 - 2016 Dr. Crane comparative blind taste-off (Saint Helena - Vice Versa cave): Black currant and earthy minerality here on the front end of the attack. Deeply pitched black…very black…cherry, and some chocolate, pyrazine, and anise. Green peppercorn and black rock show up as well, with an almost overly-earthy Las Piedras kind of profile. So vastly different from the other wines in terms of richness. Finished a little flat, linear, and at times, kinda crunchy.

This was my #9 of the 9 wines sampled.

June 8, 2019 - 2016 Dr Crane Blind Wine Comparison (Vice Versa Cave): #9 of 9 on my card and #9 of 9 overall. Of all the wines in the tasting, this was the only one that didn't reflect the vineyard at all. Instead of the hallmark blueberries, violets and stone notes associate with Dr Crane, this was smokey, with burnt embers and charcoal. On the palate it was not bad per se, but it was the most austere and had no sense of place. More medium bodied, it was hard to really find anything I enjoyed in this wine vs the rest of the lineup.

May 30, 2019 - A lifted floral nose leads into a full-bodied, pure medley of blackberry and dark cherry fruit and earth. Smoothly textured but firm tannins that loosened nicely but that took 4 hours in the decanter. Needs another few years to come together.

This Dr. Crane was my favorite of the 2016 A-O offerings (Era, BTK, etc.) during my tasting in October 2018. Scored 95+ as it will improve with time in the bottle.

December 21, 2018 - There's nice improvement showing in this wine compared with the last tasting. As previously mentioned, attractive purple/ blue color, nice nose, ripe dark berry fruit and good extraction. This Cab has a good, firm backbone with a nice future ahead of it. I like this wine. 95 Points.

November 30, 2018 - Black currant, earthy blackberry, black soil, dark mulch, cedar, and anise. Less overtly flamboyant in its current state, with a restrained but highly focused delivery of flavor. Not surprisingly, this is showing less intensity than the barrel sample I had nearly a year ago, but the overall profile is beautifully crafted with age-ability and purity in mind. Presently, the Crane finishes slightly tight and youthfully linear, with a higher register black cherry and alcohol note; especially when compared to the more expressive Era, the Crane holds more of a tannic grip over its fruit flavor at the moment.

Hold the Crane for at least 3+ years. 94-95+ points, with certain upside after 2022/2023+.

November 23, 2018 - This DC has a lot going for it as it continues to reveal its maturing qualities and distinctive character. Pleasing and appealing purple/ blue color, nice nose and ripe dark berry fruit and good extraction. There is some spine and backbone with this wine that will take it a few points higher but more of a 94+ showing at this point for me. A really good wine.
