November 1, 2018 - Varietal Chardonnay characters are hard to come by here; rather it looks very of it’s place and quite ripe and full-bodied as Smaragd can be. Some tropical fruits, yellow peach, cantaloupe, mango. Something a little flinty and sulphidey in the background. A bit of a viscous, oily palate. Feels quite sweet. The back label says “trocken”, but it also says 13%, which is on the lower side for Smaragd. Hmm. The acidity is there but it’s a bit buried underneath the masses of extract and texture. A little bit cumbersome and not all that well balanced.
