March 21, 2020 - Had my daughter and her boyfriend over for a wine & pizza night. Opened a 2016 Carter OG, 2013 Dunn Howell Mountain and a 2012 Shafer Hillside Select. It was very interesting as my daughter ranked them Carter/Shafer/Dunn, her BF had it Dunn/Shafer/Carter and I had them Shafer/Dunn/Carter. It primarily came down to a preference for sweetness, with Carter being substantially sweeter than Dunn. We slow ox’d all 3 bottles for 3 hours and drank over 3 more hours. The Carter lost a little sweetness at the very end. I felt the Carter was really catching up at the end as some of the secondary notes started to balance out the sweetness. Probably comparing it to the Shafer pushed down the score slightly as the OG has always been one of my favorite wines.

February 19, 2020 - Simply stated one of the best wines I have ever tasted. Powerful. fruit forward, smooth and balanced. I could probably say that about a several wines but this one is special. Its has a wonderful nose of saddle leather and flowers, its beautiful across the pallet gliding effortlessly and it finishes without hitch.

Just a spectacular modern cabernet. 98+ I wish I had a case of these...

February 19, 2020 - Initial impression 96 or so but over 1-2 hours in the glass a great 98 or maybe even highter. The fruit after 1-2 hours of air was still overpowering but in hours 3-4, it all came together in balance. Beautiful spicebox, power and elegance. Seemless melding of acidity, sweet tannins and fruit makes for a great wine. Thanks HMC for bringing this to the table. Enjoyed by all.

February 1, 2020 - My second bottle of 3. Now i must see how this wine develops for my last bottle but its hard to beat right now. This bottle showed such purity of blueberry, cassis and blackberry jam. It is very sweet but never jammy or heavy.

December 25, 2019 - Christmas eve at my parents. Drank next to the 2017 vintage. Dark purple fruit - currants/cassis, dark cherry, blackberry, and plum. Really smooth, nice purity, and really nice depth/concentration - full body. Nice rich/vibrant flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, a little chocolate/cocoa, and a mineral/graphite component. Long finish. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but but drinking well after the decant despite its youth. In all, the 2016 vintage was quite a bit better as expected - bigger/fuller fruit and more expressive/flavorful. However, I was also pleasantly surprised by the 2017 vintage but hopefully it adds some weight with more time. WA anticipated maturity 2022 to 2050, however, I loved how this vintage was drinking at this youthful stage. In my opinion, in line with the 99 rating from WA. 100% cab.
