Community Tasting Notes 10

  • Laz4wine Likes this wine: 89 points

January 13, 2023 - About the same with high acidity/sourness but a bit smoother with clean clipped finish. Nice balance and salty-food friendly.

November 13, 2020 - Nice nose, no follow through on palate. Unimpressive

August 18, 2020 - Similar positive TN, very Rhone style with a little funk and forest floor, a bit high on the tart raspberry-lemon fruit / acid balance but some dark plum and mocha notes made it enjoyable overall.

May 31, 2020 - A solid GSM and good value in the mid to upper $20s that’s comparable in value to similarly priced French Rhône wines.

This one needed about an hour to open up, but rewarded us with a well integrated wine with plenty of red, purple, and black fruit, dried herbs, and medium tannins.

Incidentally, I met Doug Margerum in a bar in Boston a couple of years ago and had a good conversation about his GSMs from cooler Santa Barbara county versus my preference for wines made from the same grapes in warmer Paso Robles (Saxum, Linne Calodo, Epoch, etc.). Though it took me two years to come around to trying his wine, and I still prefer Saxum et. al., the value in M5 is unmistakeable and I will definitely buy more. Good wine from a good guy.

October 31, 2019 - Too tart. Out of balance.
