Community Tasting Notes 9

May 3, 2021 - Nicely balanced blackberry fruit with tertiary notes. Agree with CAPNFUTSAL that this is at or near peak right now. I often think Virginia wines are overpriced, but at about $30, this can absolutely compete with other regions.

March 13, 2021 - Decanted for 1 hr before started drinking; still evolved over the 2 hrs while drinking. The color is inviting. To the nose, blackberry more than black cherry with oak, forest floor and very slight vegetal - plus a general wood note. On the palate, black cherry > blackberry/black currant >> black raspberry that are constant, while dark plum, cranberry and very slight blueberry fade into red raspberry and slight cherry. A nice balance of spices with none overshadowing another. Slight cola with very slight vanilla and oak. Tannins are in threads barely showing but do resurface at a dry finish. Medium mouthfeel and medium length. Very smooth and sufficiently complex - maybe near peak now. Recommend decant for 50-60 minutes first and enjoy as it opens. Paired well with steak on the grill.

October 26, 2020 - One of Virginia’s best reds. Notes of dark cherry and tobacco. Had plenty of life ahead with good acidity and tannins, but drinks nicely now.

September 6, 2020 - Decanted; opened up after 40-45 minutes. Nice color - more shades of petit verdot than merlot. To the nose, black cherry, blackberry and slight red fruit. Slight forest and oak. On the palate, blackberry, black cherry, dark plum with slight red fruit. Forest with some oak and faint leather remaining. Very slight spice (all spice). Tannins in soft strings providing adequate structure. Medium mouthfeel and medium length. Less fruit forward than the 2017 currently but a great blend that may be near peak in 2021.

May 24, 2020 - Decanted - opens up after 60 min. To the nose, blackberry and black cherry more than plum and boysenberry. Slight forest and oak/leather, with very slight green pepper. A faint mix of wet stone and pencil. A hint of meat (e.g., butcher shop) after opens. On the palate, black cherry and blackberry predominate for fruit. Black pepper with slight green pepper; leather/oak mostly dissipates. Tannins start in course strings but turn to silky threads after opening up. Medium-thin mouthfeel with medium length. Complex with integrated layers. Should be solid for another 2-3 years.
