February 20, 2010 - Two things that approach nirvana for a heathen: actually hitting the golf shot you visualize and nailing a wine blind. Both require muscle memory and execution of the highest order. With my friend Scott a few weeks ago at Loxahatchee I hit the greatest 8-iron of my life stiff to an island green in the wind. It took imagination, courage, and more skill than I knew I possessed. Tonight I was served this wine double-blind. The color was light purple, fully translucent, seemed to suggest some age. Nose airy, redolent of fresh cherries and a little streak of minerality. While it got more and more inviting as it opened, it never crossed into a meaty, big or bouncy impression of Cotes de Nuits. I guessed '01 Cotes de Beaune Premier Cru, and you know what? I was dead right, cause this easily drank a level up. Great transparency and a tribute both to the winemaker and an underrated vintage.

(Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses) Medium-pale colour with a hint of amber at the rim. The nose is soft, with a suggestion of undergrowth and pretty violets. The palate is mineral yet soft, not so deep but a fine width and a savoury finish. An altogether lovely aperitif if you can get a good price.
