December 31, 2023 - Good wine, not flamboyant at this point. Needs time to aerate

May 1, 2022 - Deep purple delicious ripe Merlot flavors (black cherry a bit fresh black pepper) some violet and delicious sweet spices. Medium to full bodied with silky textured tannins and complex persistent finish.

February 17, 2020 - Amsterdam UGCB Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Beurs van Berlage / Eden Hotel): Trade tasting, brief note. Like the Conseillante which preceded it, quite closed on the nose, but with intensity and drive on the palate, not easily approachable right now, very good length. I see potential here, but it needs time.

January 25, 2020 - I find the 17 Gazin disappointing - the fruit is there but it’s mellow and fat without a lot of energy or dynamism. Shortish finish.

January 24, 2020 - 2017 UGC Des Bordeaux, San Francisco, a favorite Chateau of mine since 1985 and I was not disappointed, nose of Black cherry, hint of earth and allspice, medium/big body, lovely, tasty, intense concentration, medium amount of soft, silky tannins, needs 4 years to peak and will earn a higher score, long finish.

January 23, 2020 - Union des Grand Cru de Bordeaux: Seattle: I must have had an off tasting, as I only noted a disappointing flat finish and weak palate. I would like to try again and hope for more.

January 18, 2020 - Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur - In Bottle Tasting (Montreal): Always a fan of Gazin and how easy this is to drink without too much thought. Very floral with additional notes of cassis, black cherry, truffle, a lush palate with fine tannins lead to a soft and delicate finish. This is an easy style of 2017 Pomerol which will be an easy crowd-pleaser

2017 Château Gazin was somehow overlooked among fellow wine drinkers at the event. Personally, it was complex, perfumed and elegant, and showed the vintage characteristics without employing heavy extraction nor excessive use of oak. The blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc was medium ruby in colour, with pronounced and lifted aromatics of violets, raspberries, red cherries and spices, with subtle meatiness in the background. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied, with medium-high level of acidity and medium-high level of silky tannin. The rather long finish was packed with flavours of tart red berries, cherries and chocolate. The elegance and the aromatic complexity seemed effortless, and was in stark contrast against some heavily extracted, bitter, and oaky counterparts. (94)

The winemaker, Nicolas de Bailliencourt, told me that the grapes were gently pressed to avoid extraction of bitter flavours, and the wine was aged for 18 months in 50% new oak. The vineyard was luckily spared from the infamous Spring frost in 2017.

Expressive without out much effort, you can easily find the flowers, cherries and wet earth notes. Soft, glossy and fresh, there is sweetness to the fruit, silk on the tannins and a generous blast of cocoa dusted red fruits in the finish.
