April 27, 2019 - Apparently, it's been over 10 years since I've had one of these. I needed a big, but mature, wine for a steak dinner and was thinking of Grange, but consulting some recent tasting notes, it seemed like my '96 was still not ready. This, on the other hand, would probably fit the bill.

Very dark, deep violet. Stinky, barnyard, organic aromas. Most of it blew off but there was always an undertone of that stink. Still mostly about the fruit. Blueberry, blackberry, dates, plum. Some cedar notes underneath all that. Fruit is sweet but not overripe. Any wood is completely absorbed by the wine. No oakiness sticks out. Big, dense, but very plush. Soft tannins make this ready to drink. It's a young adult and has quite a way to go before hitting peak, but you won't be disappointed now. No need to decant. Pop and pour was fine. Lot's of sediment. Great length. Glad I've got a few more!

April 19, 2019 - Decanted 2½ hrs. Large complex bq w blackberries, dark chocolate, coffee, eucalyptus, sous-bois, integrated oak, old leather. Full body w crisp acidity, lovely integrated tannins, lots of fruit (dark berries, blueberries). Long, complex aftertaste. Fully mature, will last for years longer. Wonderful!

    April 13, 2019 - 57th TWIGS meeting (A and P-S's place): Cork. 13.5% alc.
    Served blind. Decanted.
Bricking but still with a reasonably dense core. Bouquet jumps out from the glass - herbal, cedar, tomato leaf, walnut and plenty of black fruits and blackcurrant. Very plush nose actually. The palate showed less fruit than the nose had promised. Maybe even a touch astringent. Had a bit of the old mahogany lounge thing going on. But the oak and tannins were pretty much fully integrated. Further swirling gave off a bit of spice and chocolate. The structure suggested cabernet but most said it didn't taste like cabernet. At this age, one can easily be led astray, and most were - suggesting the source country was France, Italy or even Spain! When the wine was revealed, there were nods of approval all round.

January 4, 2019 - Great. Calmed down but powerful. With Prime Rib.

December 12, 2018 - Drank leftovers after opening for a cassoulet dinner, two nights later on December 12, 2018. Pitch black in color with a black raspberry color meniscus. A bit of tar and spice on the scent with a whiff of oak and blue fruit. Dense and pretty monolithic with nice fruit, lots of smooth tannin and a touch of oak on the juicy finish. No hints of falling apart or oxidation. A big cab. Really nice wine, but not really complex or evolved at this time. Improved in the glass. Still has plenty of life ahead. Thanks for sharing, Max.

(Penfolds Bin 707) The latest vintage of this flagship wine has an intense nose of sweet, chewy, tarry bramble and blackcurrant fruit. It is sweet, rounded and smooth on the palate, with cigarbox notes and blackcurrant fruit. This wine is in a very simple, primary stage of its evolution. Tannins are prominent, yet very supple and there is balanced acidity. This wine needs a lot more time yet.
