Community Tasting Notes 4

March 18, 2020 - One hour decant and consumed over two evenings. Simply stated, not that impressive a wine for the price point. It is more than serviceable. There is a bigness about it but no real beauty, at least not at this point. Hopefully the problem lies in the vintage's early accessibility leading to higher expectations while in its infancy. Fingers crossed.

October 23, 2019 - Not as good as previous vintages but still a very good wine. Tasted on a visit to the tasting room and opened a bottle a few days after getting my shipment. Still quite young and room for future potential

October 13, 2019 - Just didn't float my boat. As with seemingly all the Venge '17s the fruit is so over the top extracted and sweet, it just isn't enjoyable to me. Seems like I could say this about many of the available '17s being poured out in Napa right now. They are all kinda the same, big, fruity, sweet jelly bombs, in not a good way. I guess with all the heat in '17 it was a real challenge to make balanced wines with proper acidity. I love Kirk Venge's wines and follow him to other wineries as well, but I just can't drink most of these '17s....

ps......and it certainly isn't just the Venge's, it's nearly every '17 we came across, even our first Carter single vineyard. There were some that were very drinkable, but again with this vintage, not able to hold a candle to the '12s thru '16s, yet the prices keep going up and up while the quality and most scores for the '17s have dropped precipitously. I'll pay for good vintages and have, more than a thousand different times, but when there is a down year and the wines suffer in quality, either cut the price accordingly or I won't buy. I'll just wait for the next decent vintage.
