August 17, 2017 - Color was correct with a decent ruby hue, popped and poured. Touch of volatility at the outset which blew off and there was some old vine fruit, winter melon and fading spices. The dryness of the vintage was really starting to show through and there is no longer enough fruit to balance the wine. It is still interesting but feel its best days are behind it and any remaining bottles need to be drunk up.

January 3, 2017 - 1966 birthday vertical at Domaine de Chevalier (Domaine de Chevalier - actually on 2 December 2016): Served single blind in this flight of Right Bank 1966s, this Château Cheval Blanc mystified us with sheer perfume, which lept out of the glass and made us think: “This is what Bordeaux excellence should be.” Certainly the RWOTN (red wine of the night), albeit with Palmer a close second. And Latour à Pomerol not far behind. The floral elegance so intense, and yet so fresh, and even delicate on the nose. Olivier Bernard thought of it in "masculine" terms. Here was “bold” but also graceful. For lovers of bold California Cabs, Cheval Blanc provides a Bordeaux contrast. The subtleness was stellar. And a wine that Robert Parker misunderstood at least twice, both scores (the latest in 2003) a mere 85 points...

November 13, 2016 - Light, fading and starting to drop fruit, this requires consumption before it loses more fruit. The texture has a smooth quality, the tertiary development is the best part of the experience, but the wine lacks distinction and exciting characteristics. Drink up.

November 5, 2016 - First dinner of the L.A. wine trip (The Bazaar at SLS, Beverly Hills, California): A nicely matured vintage but more on the austere side of things. Prune, dark fruit, old library book, and tobacco rounded out a rustic aromatic profile. It did have a nice mouthfeel and good length on the finish. Tannins still present but have integrated well. Acidity was perhaps a bit high contributing to some tartness.

(Château Cheval Blanc) Bricking medium red violet color; mature, earthy, black fruit, graphite nose; good tart plum, black fruit, cigar ash, graphite palate; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (poured blind; my 2nd guess was "old Cheval")
