Community Tasting Notes 3

December 17, 2020 - A very nice example. Complex aroma, with nice peppery and smoky notes. I was surprised by the mouthfeel for a Grüner: long, oily, very luxurious.

Personally, I would cellar it longer, but I needed a Smaragd for a family tasting.

June 25, 2020 - Unscrew and pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium-plus intensity, big fruit - green apple, melon, and pear with hints of buttered bread. Palate: Medium bodied, nice mouth-feel, good balance, melon and ripe pear attack, solid acidic back-bone, good mid-palate persistence, buttered toast and minerals dominate the back-end and linger through a 30-45 second finish.

July 24, 2019 - Tasted blind. Clear, bright medium (+) yellow with a green hue. The nose is clean, medium (+) in intensity, with aromas of green apple, white flowers, tart lemon, wet earth. The nose is youthful and there is no evidence of oak. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) alcohol (13.5%) and a slight phenolic bitterness and saltiness on the finish. This is a medium (+) bodied white, with medium (+) flavor intensity and length. It is drinking well now and has the potential for improving with further aging thanks to its structure and abundance of fruit.

This appears to be a cool climate, Old World wine. The phenolic bitterness point to Albarinho, Pinot Grigio or Gruner. It doesn't quite have as much acidity and saltiness as an Albarinho, and the alcohol is quite a bit higher. It doesn't have the copper color and leesyness commonly found in Pinot Gris. Must taste more Gruner.
