November 12, 2019 - Given no reviews in the last few months I thought it appropriate to open and evaluate this wine. 3 hour decant and open along side a 2014 Kamen and a 2016 Turnbull Black Label this wine more than held its own. My impressions were of a nicely balanced, smooth, well integrated (for a youngster) wine. Nothing out of place, nice red fruit front end, beautiful glycerin laden mid palette and decent finish that improved with air. Could have used a touch more acid IMO but hey I'm being super critical but that's what I expect from a good CT review.

Easy 94. BTW All 3 wines tonight were in the 94-95 range. Life's a bitch

July 9, 2019 - Purple fruit - blueberry, currants, dark cherry, and a touch of dark plum. Improvement from a couple months ago - the fruit has softened/opened-up some more. I wasn't wowed by the depth/concentration (medium/medium plus body), however, it was really smooth coupled with a beautiful purity and really nice vibrant flavors of dark berries, some spice, and a little graphite component. Solid finish but not overly long nor deep - I believe it could use some more time to open-up on the back-end. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved with time but drinking quite well after the decant despite its youth. Really enjoyable and approachable at this stage with a decent decant, however, once again I believe another year or so should be beneficial to let it open-up a little more and hopefully add some weight. I believe the 96 rating from WA makes sense with a little more time.

June 23, 2019 - Decided to try the Fortuna after recently consuming the OG and the Verdad, the three Carter wines I bought in a mixed case. The Fortuna is absolutely stunning given the QPR. Fresh and concentrated, the lighter red fruit jumps out at you while showcasing an alluring mixture of raspberry, cherry, strawberry, plum and a hint of spice. While a bit lighter than its bigger brothers, I can’t remember a better wine under $100. The visceral reaction I get from the 2016 Fortuna is an overwhelming sense of freshness. Really a great wine irrespective of price point.

April 29, 2019 - Decided to revisit to see how it would develop over two days - thinking about buying more to lay down since it’s getting harder to find legitimate mid-90 rated Napa cabs for around $100. Dark purple fruit - blackberry, dark cherry, currants, blueberry, and a little plum. Solid depth/concentration, however, as somewhat expected it is still a little tannic. Nice flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, and plum. Fairly long finish but also a little tannic. Decanted for two hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time. WA anticipated maturity 2020 to 2045 which makes sense - although I’m inclined to give this vintage at least a full year before revising. In addition, the Winery typically recommends giving their single vineyard cabs at least 5 years from the vintage date so 2021 which probably makes even more sense.

Day two, some improvement - the fruit did soften/open-up some more but the flavors weren’t as expressive which is quite often the case on the second day. Once again, I believe this vintage needs at least a year but more likely two for prime time. The 96 rating from WA appears fitting with some more time.

April 21, 2019 - At PnP, a nice nose of dark cherry, blueberry, and blackberry. Wonderfully pure dark fruit rides the high registers with a still unresolved tannic note on the bottom mid-palate and on through the finish. The density is here, the intensity is here, the acidity contributes some nice energy, yet it's still a bit early for this wine to deliver all it's capable of which might take another year or so. A 2 hour decant loosened the tannin's grip. Looking forward to revisit in 2020 with a potential 94+ score.
