June 24, 2023 - Lots of fruit on the nose, citrus, apple, with balanced sweetness. Taste was smooth, citrus, light tannins, mix of other fruits. Great finish

November 6, 2021 - This is so good. I had the 2015 blind a few weeks ago, and was surprised that it was a sauv Blanc, as all of the flavors were so well integrated. This one is too. Gold-ish green in the glass, with a slight greenish nose. Not grassy necessarily, and not strong aromas of anything else that gives away sauv Blanc. But slight stone fruit aromas. The flavors are really well integrated. Perfect acidity, white stone fruit flavors, very little to no grapefruit (which is good with me), and maybe slight melon. So refreshing. Drank with seared tuna steaks.

September 6, 2021 - Not a fan. Sharp and unpleasant, this wine is not my style. I appreciate the lemon and grapefruit flavors ...... but why ?

March 27, 2021 - 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Our hosts were not enthralled by the performance of the three warm ups so this was a late addition to the lineup. An initial bit of sulfur/matchstick covers what fruit may be here, and as it was just out of the fridge it was too cold. As it warmed it showed some citrus fruit and a soapy floral element. Citrus on the palate with a strong vein of acidity. I could have seen albariño or torrontes, or perhaps something from Italy, but at no point did l’Apres-Midi come to mind. This either needs some time to come into its own, or perhaps this was an off bottle, either way, not what I would expect from this label. (R&D)

August 7, 2020 - Slightly muted, subtle flavours. Clearly a high quality wine but lacking in oomph compared to some of my favourite Sauvignon Blancs. Good pairing with food, but then what SB isn’t? This opens up a little as the temperature rises so maybe that is the trick. Melon and peach flavours start to develop, but not in any punchy way. Next time I’ll definitely decant!

November 12, 2019 - Peter Michael Trade Tasting (Fullerton Hotel - Grand Cru Wine Concierge): Pale lemon. Lemon flowers, minty aromas, as well as some underripe peaches. Some sweetish sugar plum flavours, as well as peaches that are noticeably riper and even honeyed, bit of grass and hay as well. Fresh acids, and a marked flavour intensity, with fairly well- integrated heat. Some fairly placed honeycombs, grass, and hay in the finish

October 26, 2019 - Or maybe somebody read my post “Have You Ever Been Disappointed”

It all started when I had decided to spend my hard-earned money, well actually it’s my Social Security check so I’m not sure how to classify that, anyway, I wanted to explore the world of some of those high-end Sauvignon Blancs that I have read and dreamt about (maybe I’m too far gone to get a life?).

So off to my local wine shop only to find the bottle of my dreams:

Peter Michael L’Après-Midi Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Only to find it selling at $99.99! Which, as I mentioned in my previous post, was well over the winery price of $64. Disappointment ensued and I gave up my quest. BUT! While revisiting the store only recently I strolled down the Sauvignon Blanc aisle like I usually do only to see that the wine is now priced at $67.99! Holy Markdown Batman!!

The last bottle, who knows if the price will return to that once previous unattainable expense, do I make the decision to use those hard-earned (wait I haven’t established that yet) dollars and pluck the wine from its cocoon and return home to shuffle it away to obscurity never to open my booty? NOT A CHANCE!

Once home. it was merely a decision to decide what I was going to make to pair with this nectar. A decision made easily as my local grocer once again had scallops on sale. This time I had to put all my mental faculties to work to find just the right preparation. Risotto, no too pedestrian for this wine. Rice works, just not some plain ole rice though. Ah! I remembered I had bought a sausage link made from chorizo that I had planned for another meal but hadn’t yet used. That chorizo, a little heat that needs something to quell the burn. Always having pineapple around for my smoothies, I think I’ve found the perfect choice. A final touch of red peppers for color, whammo!!

Being the sauce king (too egotistic), maybe prince of sauce, I needed something that would cool and something to relend some heat. I found the perfect recipes; an avocado cream for coolness and for the heat, some chipotle adobo cream. It’s at this point that while looking at my pictures I took, I realize that I need a couple of squirt bottles instead of using spoons! Since this isn’t about the food, much, I’ll finish by saying that it was heavenly, a little heat a little sweetness and a little creaminess. It even went with the wine.

    Oh, the wine….

As usual, I couldn’t wait till dinner was ready, although I did wait until almost the dinner bell. Wait, that was the timer on my oven. Pouring a glass and giving it a little time (maybe a half-second) I raised the glass to partake in my well-established *SSSS.

Drifting aromas of tropical fruit and a slightly honeyed note begin my journey into wine nirvana. Followed by crisp citrus notes and depth of minerality lending to its taut body and a long finish, brought about by the 100% barrel fermentation using 10% new oak. 86% Sauvignon Blanc is combined with 14% Sémillon to further help enrich the wine. Coming from their Les Pavots Vineyard in Alexander Valley at elevations around 1,000 feet, it helps to conger up exactly the wine’s name L’Après-Midi or “The Afternoon,” a lazy and laid-back time to sit and enjoy the day, of course with the wine in hand!

My quest now complete, at least in this particular instance, I can set my sites on future wines that I may wish to seek out and avail myself the honor, nay privilege, to savor. I just hope I don’t run into another “price modification” again.

    Cheers
