December 27, 2020 - I'm a philistine, a barbarian, uncouth and inelegant. My delight at this wine is proof positive.

My darling had bought me a Coravin for Christmas, "it's not so you drink more wine, it's so you can drink less." So off I went to my two favourite wine stores and returned home with a dozen bottles that included a super-Tuscan, an Amarone, a Silver Oak Cabernet, a Cornas, a CNdP, and two cheap Australian reds.

I opened the Silver Oak and it tasted meh. Not bad, but not $70. Then a glass of the super Tuscan - and it was too young. That's two bottles down, a hearty dinner in front of me and I'm not enjoying my wine. So I turned to this consistent old friend ...

Opaque, cassis and vanilla on the nose, lots of Ribena fruit (blackcurrant cordial for the non-Brits) yet still a dry wine, with plenty of acidity, soft tannins. This is very smooth tasting, not hot, despite 15% alcohol, and basically an appealing, drinkable wine. Intellectually, I think that a Cabernet must taste obviously Cabernet to be good - but I guess I don't taste wine with my intellect. This was satisfying - it restored the smile on my grouchy, entitled face. Paying $23 for this in Manhattan is a bargain, when the winesearcher average price is $30.

If you like Clio, Juan Gil, Venge Scout's Honor or Ridge Geyserville then you might enjoy this.
