December 23, 2023 - I had a couple of these, then lost one in my cellar and in the spirit of XMAS found the missing bottle today so what the hell, decided to open it. What a bitchen wine. 100% Chard, disgorged January 2020, no dose from a producer that I really appreciate. I have visited Bertrand Gautherot twice now, and I respect his principles and fervor to stay true to them. Biodynamics, impeccable vineyard work, the wines are some of my favorites and I keep buying them because they are so good. This 2016 opens with some taut lemon that quickly relaxes. The wine settles in nicely, and it really drinks terrific when still. Light lemon curd, kumquat, green apple with a wet stone finish. This wine sits in the glass at nearly 70f and the beauty of the fruit and acid, then joined by the structure of that wet rock, just delicious. Plenty more for study tomorrow!....

December 21, 2023 - Very fresh and fruity. Early in development, of course in particular this magnum format. Complexity hopefully ahead, not present yet.

September 9, 2023 - Disgorged in January 2020. In a moderately oxidative style, the nose rises some expectations of development. Still, the palate is quite firm with high acidity that softens somewhat as the temperature rises in the glass. Optimally needs a few years more in the cellar, and most likely should age well until the end of the 30s. (Disclaimer: ITB with Swedish importer Vin & Natur)

March 4, 2023 - Every Reddit post I came along to this date recommends Vouette & Sorbee as one of the essential producers to seek out if you're just getting into grower Champagne. Gautherot Bertrand’s dedication to terroir is deep; as he told Peter Liem - “the culture of the vine is my passion.” It led him to biodynamic certification for his domaine in 1998. That so many of today’s leading Aube growers tend their wines naturally is largely due to Bertrand’s example.

This is a lovely Chardonnay coming from Kimmeridgian limestone soils and a very hands-off approach in the winery (wild yeast fermentation, no dosage, no SO2). Very clean style, light toast, fresh citrusy fruit. Gentle bubbles. Crisp and delightful to sip on its own, but I was daydreaming of some fried chicken to go along. More elegant than powerful, just the way I like it - give me blanc de blancs any day of the week.

October 28, 2022 - The Blanc d’Argile is a Blanc de Blancs from of course 100% Chardonnay and it’s Brut Nature which means 0 dosage. This particular bottle is based on the 2016 vintage and it was disgorged on 30 January 2020, so it was getting close to 3 years of bottle age! I bought it for €67 recently, so it was really a steal…

Color was a beautiful straw starting to get a bit golden. Pouring gave a nice foamy mousse yet the bubbles were tiny.

Nose straight away revealed green apple, pear and some quince layered with citrus fruits, pickled lemon and some lime zest. There was a touch of butter, nuts, honeysuckle and chalk creeping in with some air and warmth.

The palate was so freaking tense and fresh. Citrus fruits, green apple, pear and quince intertwined and playing together. Such high acidity and you can feel there’s no dosage, but it’s so well-made and balanced that you hardly notice it and it opens up for having your focus completely on the juice. Pickled lemon, toast, butter, nuts and white flowers show up again after a while, and the minerality from chalk and clay is crisp and beautiful.
