March 23, 2019 - Third bottle. Bright, fresh acidity, fruit laden. This wine needs lot of time but is delicious today. Medium body

November 1, 2018 - So here it is day 2. Bottle sat opened at room temperature for 24 hours.

Better today, a little Less aromatic but larger in mouth presence. Still amazingly fresh with even more red fruit evident. I think these are built to need a couple of years. Medium weight (less so today) yet powerful flavors and a finish of some tobacco. I love it and could see this going higher.

October 31, 2018 - Very aromatic and teasing nose of an elite Cabernet which makes me think .... WOW ! It is also quite dark color in the glass. I get fresh crushed red fruits, licorice, and cedar wood on the nose. On the palette a bit of a let down in the first hour. I am letting this sit. Tannins very present at the mid palette. Finish is more wood than lingering fruits as it is closed and tannic.

I must say that for a mid weight wine this is really impressive. Not a fruit bomb but boy is this intellectual ! I will report back tomorrow but for now better than some of the recent scores I saw posted.

Did I open this too early ?

October 25, 2018 - This wine met two of my criteria for taking a flyer: (1) it received a crazy high rating (in this case, WS 95 in a vintage with few of them), and (2) it wasn't crazy expensive ($105 from the winery). This formula has its flaws, but part of what I love about wine is that it's always changing: you need to keep an open mind, since the next great winery could be right around the corner (even if it's founded by baseball players, and has a kind of strange, baseball-centric name - OK, you get it, I had my doubts).

Cherry red in color and medium in body, the wine offers aromas of blueberry tart, menthol, and graphite. Tastes of blackberry, sour cherry, black licorice, cocoa powder, and crushed rock, with a silky finish. 14.9% alcohol. Drink in next year or two. Decant at least an hour.

This wine is not competing in the full-throttle space occupied by the Russel Bevans of the world (as much as I love his wines). Instead, this seems to be aiming for a more ripe-but-medium-bodied, TRB-type approach (think Revana). That said, it's relying on cooler vineyard sites (Oak Knoll and Coombsville), which confer a darkness, almost dampness that doesn't quite allow the wine to achieve lift-off. Bottom line, this is a decent, probably good wine - but it didn't taste obviously special.
