Critic tasting note: "This is perhaps the greatest ‘dry’ Riesling in existence and a formidable growing season produced this formidable wine. It has a canary-yellow color with light golden notes and seems as if it was just bottled. The aroma explodes into a thousand floral and mineral rivulets with notes of elderberry, kiwi, geranium, citron, acacia and more, making it impossible to describe all the fruity sensations that emerge from the glass. The mouthfeel is wonderful: dry and invigorating, very fresh and rich. This is absolutely the paradigm of Riesling and the balances expressed in such a chaos of sensations is almost embarrassing." - 98/100, Doctorwine

Clos Sainte Hune is a 1,67 hectares exceptional stony argilo-calcaire, or Muschelkalk, limestone terroir, exclusively planted in Riesling, located in the heart of Grand Cru Rosacker, in Hunawihr. ? The calcary soil allows this Riesling to develop a specific aroma and a wonderful concentration of fruits. Dry yet succulent, of phenomenal complexity, this wine develops an extraordinary aftertaste of minerals after a few years in bottle. The plot, which is approximately 50 to 70 years old, is south south east exposed and the yields are low.

- Winemaking
-
We pick the grapes as late as possible in order to achieve maximum ripeness which, in turn, gives optimum depth of flavour and complexity. The grapes are picked by hand and pressed gently in a pneumatic press. The juice runs into the cellar by gravity and clarifies naturally prior fermentation. The juice ferment in stainless steel at controlled temperature for 3 or 4 weeks. The wine is vinified to complete dryness. No malolactic fermentation.

The 1999 vintage produced a mixed picture in France. It was an excellent year for red Burgundy and Grand Cru and top Premier Cru wines will still be drinking nicely. Northern Rhône Syrah also excelled and Hermitage and Côte Rôtie should be worth seeking out.
However those regions elsewhere in the country which are capable ...
