March 23, 2019 - Atkin Chardonnay Comparative tasting (Lismore): (Tasted Blind): An attractive lifted, floral and intense nose offers fresh flowers, peach blossom, pure stone and citrus fruits, and a mineral element.
A precise, direct fruited entry that exudes mineral, flint and fruit brightness. Whilst not overly complex, this is lovely in its expression showcasing peach, nectarine, creme fraiche and oatmeal, all dusted with a flurry of spice and underscored by a piercing acidity (for me Elgin style, Especially PC). Medium to long, it closes with riper notes of ripe papaya. Some felt it was a little 1-dimensional, and perhaps the oak protrudes somewhat at this maturation stage. Also, the finish seems sweeter, almost with a glucophilic nature hence the overripe papaya.
32-year-old vines, so among the oldest Chardonnay vines in South Africa. -
