Community Tasting Notes 9

January 8, 2024 - Fifth of 6. Generally consistent notes from my first TN (5/21) and subsequent bottles, with secondary notes—ash, dry earth, ground spice, leather, wood and dark roast coffee—leading the way, with more subtle notes of mixed dark fruit. Got about half an hour of air before we started drinking, then consumed over about an hour and half, and I liked this progressively more over that time, whether because of the positive effects of the drink up to that point or because we were pairing it with food (stuffed poblanos). Not sure what the future holds here—I bought this half case for $20/btl, so my plan was to drink sooner than later—but I had several bottles of the ‘04, the first 2 of which drank really well until a couple of years ago before the last one faded. This will never be anyone’s idea of a fruit forward wine, but moving a bit more in that direction would be positive for me. If you like the Italian, and specifically, Campanian, palate, you’ll likely appreciate this, and if it’s not the best Taurasi ever, it may well be the best $20 Taurasi ever, and was a big hit with my non-winey friend. 91+ if scoring.

May 21, 2021 - First of six ($20@) from a recent purchase; mostly shared with my sis and a friend during this season of very moderated drinking. 2.5 hour decant, with a whiff but no taste prior to a long walk and initial quaff. Fabulous nose, which was the most vivid part of the wine, with volcanic soil, dust, mixed berry compote, raisins a coffee finish with plenty of structure. Medium dark purple with a slight brown note, surprisingly light-ish to medium bodied, medium to thick legs. Medium+ acidity and tannins which were present but integrated, no heat. Medium+ intensity and complexity, medium persistence. Prior TNs capture this wine well, which is in many ways consistent with my notes on the '04 which I've been drinking, but which seems more complex at this point. It's hard to know where this wine is in its evolution, and while I quite enjoyed it and thought it was a screamer at what I paid, seemed ever so slightly disappointing at the moment, based on the great nose and initial palate, but with a bit of hollowness and relatively short finish, as Pintag notes. The wine did develop a pleasing a bitter chocolate secondary note on night 2, and when paired with mixed leftovers, particularly sausage and polenta, hit a higher gear, as Italian wines often do viz food vs. as opposed to standalone sippers. Still, I'd have liked more vibrant fruit, and while I love the earthy minerality of this wine at present, unless the fruit becomes just a bit more powerful, whether on its own or from the structure stepping down a bit, this could be as good as it gets, although it's likely to at least hold here for quite a while, particularly if the '04 is an indication. I'll experiment with my next bottle and see how it tastes without air, but for the time being, this is a 90-91 with some potential to go up a point+ before it's done.

April 2, 2021 - Rich and fairly ripe, leathery fruit, with fleshy texture and then the tannin hits you. Fairly well-balanced with medium acidity. Depth seems to drop off during the mid-palate phase and the finish is fairly short. This is actually very pleasing if you don't mind the tannin. Definitely is very structured and should age, but I worry about the lack of depth for the long haul. I don't drink much Aglianico, but this had an Italian feel to it, though if tasting blind, I don't know that I wouldn't end up in the new world with Cabernet.
If scoring, 89-90, with some upside potential in a few years.

May 2, 2020 - I agree with Hutch here- a great value for upwards improvement and aging potential. Dark wine, loads of black fruit, dust, and creosote in the nose. In the mouth, there's a puckering acidity, solid tannins. Flavors of coffee, black fruits, old wood, and a full body. Very young, very primary- I'd love to fast forward this wine 10 or so years. Great with a grilled steak and some roasted broccolini with calabrian chiles.
