April 15, 2023 - PnP into a Grassl Cru. Bought two of these on WineBid recently mainly because of the 2016 vintage and I was unaware that Brovia made a freisa. Not too much going on aromatically. On the palate is sour cherry and pine. Hint of alcohol. Medium to light bodied. Herbal. Finish is quite herbal and resinous bitter pine. Medium tannins. I like this. It is unusual. For my tastes somewhere between nebbiolo, sangiovese, and a bitter amaro. Ok value at $30.

August 1, 2019 - Great Freisa with deep fruit and solid structure. Small quantities of this label, worth to seek out.

February 12, 2019 - Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. 100% Freisa. Clear, bright, medium (+) ruby. The nose is medium (+) in intensity, with red fruit, red flowers and generally Nebbiolo-like. Freisa is indeed related to Nebbiolo and has some of the same characteristics. The palate is dry and much richer and more structured than one would expect from the nose, with medium (+) acidity, pronounced tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). The alcohol, however, appears quite a bit lower on the palate. Overall, it is a medium (+) to full-bodied wine, with substantial flavor intensity and a pleasant, slight bitterness on the medium (+) long finish. It is barely entering its optimal drinking window now and should continue to evolve over the next five to ten years. A really interesting and well-made wine which is worth seeking out.

December 25, 2018 - If you’ve never been wowed by Freisa, seek this out. Positively monumental structure on the pop and pour...almost overwhelming...but over the course six hours, this unfurled into quite the stunner. Fresh red raspberries and strawberries with flowers and herbs on the nose. On the palate it’s bright strawberries and minerals with a long, long finish with something that reminded me a bit of teriyaki. Drink now with a few hours of air or hold. Get some.
