June 22, 2023 - I thought I was going to wait many years to open my final bottle of the 2017 Oakville Farmhouse, but I really wanted to have something special, and I spotted this bottle prior to dinner and grabbed it. It didn't even get a decant. Turns out it really didn't need it. From the beginning it had an approachability and depth that made it an absolute pleasure to drink. Yes there were some rough edges. It's not resolved, and in that case not "ready." That said I don't really know what "ready" means other than the wine provides a lot of pleasure without having to puzzle out what's going on. The fruit is still quite fresh, the aromatics complex and elevated - as I said about a bottle two years ago, this smells like it comes from Oakville. It was only through great strength of willpower that I was able to save a healthy glass for another night. I kept saying "this is just amazing" out loud, as I went back for another small splash three separate times. So much depth of material to explore here, but I don't know as I would get more visceral pleasure from this wine than I did last night.

November 20, 2022 - Decanted this one about 3 hours before it started showing fruit. Then it truly opened up more and more the next 2 -3 hours at dinner. Still tight on the finish after about 5 hours exposed to open air, but it did show signs of greatness to come. I don't know the percentages here since there are so many varietals in this field blend, but zin appears to be the dominant one here. I know it was young, but I have 3 more and couldn't help myself. If you have one of these, there is no hurry. This one will last 10 more years, but I will not open my next one for at least 5 more years

June 19, 2022 - Two hour decant. Nose of dry blackberry with notes of prunes, coal and violets. Palate bring blackberry pie flavors but again they're on the dry side, adding bay leaf, black raspberry, aloe, cocoa, wet wood, and a tang of iron with a quick blueberry acidic streak. Dry, dusty finish with black fruit, blackberry, dried rosemary, espresso crema, hints of limoncillo, and a strong oak back end. This is a complex dry wine that you savor and contemplate rather than a zesty field blend you quaff quickly.
