September 29, 2019 - GBV loves aging their wines on Hungarian oak. In this case the 2014 Erato sat for a whopping 36 months on medium toast, new oak before bottling. While the oak adds a lot of interesting spice, clove, smoke and cocoa notes and smooths out the moderate tannins, one is left with a drying finish that amplifies the 14.3% alcohol and oak flavor a bit too much. Some, or many, may totally be fine with that. There is a lot to like - aromas of violets, mint and pipe tobacco, bold black fruits, and flavors of chalky minerals, roasted jalapeƱos (totally appropriate for hot weather cab franc) and gravel. Good wine, balanced acidity, but just a touch heavy on the oak.
