Community Tasting Notes 11

October 21, 2023 - Ganevat Mon Pere Vertical (Chambers): Leaner, saltier, and edgier than the 2008 tasted ahead of it. No oxidative notes on this one compared to 2008. Finger limes, green apple, crushed pumice stone. I quite liked this at first, it was complex, focused, and the nerviness of it was quite appealing. As time went this became a touch disjointed and developed this acetone laden note on mid-palate that overpowered the rest of the wine and I struggled to see past.

    ABV: 12%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling.
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Also complicated and quite lean. There was some botrytis but this time with more grey rot than noble, so intense sorting was required. The delicacy and patina came once again from long ageing.

August 6, 2022 - Tasted next to the 2008 Overnoy Chardonnay. Wow, the first whiff was already redeeming! Very powerful on the nose with so much going on, but not losing focus. Flavors are of lemon, orange, apple, minerals, and crushed rocks. The palate has a TON of acidity, notes of meyer lemon, lime, grapefruit, and green apple. It appears a bit more backwards than the nose. Long finish. This is outstanding, but really all about potential today. I'd wait at least 7-10 years before opening another one. The Overnoy may have been slightly more enjoyable to drink, but this wine has it all (and maybe too much so right now). 96-97+

July 30, 2022 - This was a memorable experience. This wine seems so young still, but it delivered so much punch and complexity to start with. Apples, lemon, strong acidity and right after it falls short and makes you salivate, and want more and more. What a great wine.

June 25, 2022 - This Savagnin is quite bretty. There are some good elements though, with notes of Comte cheese, green apple, chalk and lemon. It has a floral thing that reminds me of lantana in the Summer heat and it has great chalky build in the mouth. The finish is tannic, salty and chewy.
