Community Tasting Notes 9

September 10, 2012 - This really was fabulous, fit for a king. To the eye the 04 Duckhorn merlot was very dark with no sign of age at the edge of the glass. On the nose this was so hedonistic with an aroma of smoky blueberry pie, clove, and high glycerin suggesting a full bodied wine in the mouth. Upon tasting, lo and behold this was indeed full bodied filling the mouth with plenty of everything including silky tannins, blueberry preserves, and a mouthfeel that would make a prostitute blush. This will be on the incline for another three years and should be on a plateau for another three. Drink by winter 2019.

May 1, 2012 - Remarkably fine merlot. Medium intensity, garnet color. Medium intensity nose. Aroma is Bordeaux-like, with earthy notes of forest floor and nutty, spicy French oak. Black fruits and some vegetal notes (green pepper and dill). On the palate, full body, low acid, soft and well-integrated tannins. Flavor characteristics match the nose perfectly. Medium-plus length. A delightful wine; drinking perfectly now.

March 17, 2012 - - Garnet color and aromas of mushroom, tobacco and licorice anise and has flavours of chocolate, licorice anise and black currant - At first smell, tar, leather and roasted herbs. On the palate it is smooth and silky with chocolate and cassis. Ended with a nice long finish. It does not get much better. Drink it if you got them and enjoy.

January 21, 2011 - Friday night dinner at Lisa and Lee's with Jamie and Rich. Brought a pair of Duckhorn Merlots - the '04 Three Palms and the '04 Estate. Both needed some time to open up - which they eventually did. Probably as good as these will get - drink 'em if you've still got them!
