February 11, 2024 - Still holding on, imagine a blend of Pinot noir and Gamay, this is what this over achiever smells like. Priced at a third of Perez's high end wines, this Mencia is a bargain. Incredible supple texture, silky smooth and long with dominating notes of strawberries and flowers. Will hold until 2030 but seriously irresistible now.
July 16, 2023 - PnP- Mondavi Bordeaux glass.
Had over 4 hours.
As good as it’s been so far. Continuing to hit its stride with more and more authority. I have no idea where the upside with this wine ends, but it is a great example of moderately ripe, cleanly made, Mencia.
Expressive purple fruits (berries and plums), violets, and coffee grounds on the nose.
Good acid, nice grip from fine grained tannins.
Plush and bitter. What a lovely combination. I am really enjoying the way this is expressing at the moment.
Out of an initial case and a half, I’ve two bottles left and I realize the wine is just hitting its stride six years in.
Note to self. Hold the last two to see what happens in another 2-5 years. (2025-28)
May 4, 2023 - This mencia has more depth then normal, black cherry is prime flavor with not much tannin. inviting and not overly complicated
March 11, 2023 - Tres bon. Pres a boire, fruite un peu fonce mais une belle buvabilite
December 25, 2022 - From memory: Bottle now more open, abundant fruit presence. Showy without excess ripeness or overwhelming character. Suitable choice for Christmas Eve dinner.
December 17, 2022 - Holy smokes this is good. Mid-weight, blood and cassis. Nice funky bouquet. Stellar with leg of lamb . I’m excited to see where this goes with some more bottle age. Excellent qpr.
December 14, 2022 - By the lofty standards Raul Perez's blancos, this is boring and monotone.
October 29, 2022 - Burnt marshmallow. Gross...
April 18, 2022 - This is still drinking very well.
Dark fruits, figs nose.
Similar palate, with hint of sweetness, marzipan.
Very good wine.
December 28, 2021 - Very Good++. Loved it. I stumbled upon this magnum at $30 a few months ago and tonight it really shined with a simple roast chicken (with onions, some lemon, thyme), roasted potatoes, and green salad dinner. This is where I'd usually go with a Loire Cab Franc, a Pinot Noir, or a CdR or some other light red. This Mencia did the trick (and did remind me of perfectly ripe Loire CF). A fairly dark color and deep nose, yet the body is medium and clean, with some herbal backend and earthy notes. Nice. 13.5% abv.
