March 30, 2024 - Good and better with some air. Mocha. Spice. A touch green. Perhaps not the depth and concentration of the best Ovid vintages but this stands up well.

October 3, 2023 - Recent one off ($200) from the big box wine store. On the nose and palate, classic intense Ovid notes of deep forest, anise, black cherries, black berries, black currants, cassis, medicine chest, mocha, mentholyptus, sweet and exotic spices, wet soil and tobacco leaf (note that the forest, mentholyptus and tobacco leaf notes may reflect the high % of CF, almost as great as the CS, 43-41). Dark purple with the slightest brown tinge, full bodied, thick legs. Medium tannins and acidity, both totally integrated, no heat. Tremendous complexity, intensity and persistence. Some years back, a friend of sfwl introduced him to the concept of the birthday month, and while I’ve never completely embraced that, this bottle, in the past week+, caps a kind of greatest hits of favorite producers/bottlings (in addition, Fontodi/Flac, Aubert and Morlet), all, as fate would have it, meriting the same score. Contra to the fairly recent ‘05 of this bottling, this came of the bottle singing, fully resolved, and if anything, with the structure fully integrated and the fruit taking a (relative) back seat, gave the sense it was late peak drinking window, if not slightly past that point. Under any circumstances, this made for an outstanding drink, blending power and deliciousness to tremendous effect, equally great on its own and with a Moroccan chicken-vegetable stew one night, perhaps even more outstanding with a wagyu ribeye the next. As mentioned ad infinitum, if not ad nasueum in other TNs, one of the ways I like to geek out on wine is to measure the effects of air on bottles, and this wine, scored the same but arrived at completely differently, was a fascinating compare/contrast with the ‘12 Morlet Estate, the ‘12 Flac and the ‘19 Aubert UV-SL chard. The first of these came out of the bottle extraordinarily, but lost some energy after the first glass and on the second night. The Aubert, no surprise, came out a bit boozy, oaky and vanillan, but just kept improving so that the final glass on night #2 was clearly best, indicating that that, as great as the present is for that bottling, the future may be even better. The Flac, as is often the case, poured with teeth rattling tannins and acidity, became magical after a couple or so hours, kept improving through the first night, but by the third, had lost some of the intensity which makes it so appealing to me. This bottle, late drinking window that it is, held with the most consistency, drinking just as solidly at the end of the last glass on night #2 as off the pour, which made it ever so slightly preferred to the Morlet. While upside seems remote, this should hold well for at least a few years. AE’s work with this label is, IMO, right there with the best in the Valley along with Abreu-Grimes and Team Colgin, and, even with recent price hikes, a relatively affordable luxury pour (what I paid for this is the most I’ve laid out for one of these, including the ‘10 and ‘14s in the wings). Wonderful stuff that I feel so lucky to continue to enjoy. 96+

August 7, 2020 - A treat to drink this side by side with a BOND and then some wonderful steaks from Dicksons (NYC) up with friends in NH. Before the Hexameter was made and I wonder if this wine wasn't a bit of a prequel to that as it had a reasonable amount of Cab Franc in it. Made the wine a bit more interesting. Amazing nose and then kindof a darkness and the fruit balanced by almost a forest floor after a rain type of feeling. Slightly heavier than the BOND, still quite nice.

(Ovid Napa Valley) The current release shows a dark, wild-plum-skin color, rich and dense in the glass. A lush nose, contrasting with the vibrant fruit explosion of the 2005, yields notes of vanilla with cooked black cherry and a vapor of cola. The soft texture hinted at on the nose is confirmed on the palate, where abundant layers of dark-red-to-purple fruit with a touch of licorice are followed by anise, well-integrated spices (particularly black pepper), and tannin. Notes of vanilla appear on the midpalate, ending in a creamy finish reminiscent of warm custard. Winery Spotlight: Ovid
