September 25, 2022 - After an hour a consistent nose of red fruit and maderized notes emerged. An interesting combination, somehow fitting for a nearly 40 year old village level wine. The palate is well balanced, still some red fruit showing, plus some earthy notes. Mid-weight, with decent length and good balance. This is clearly aging on its acid, which is present but not obtrusive. This bottle has a pleasant combination of fresh fruit and aged notes, holding steady but certainly coming along. The dryness and tartness are really nice with tart English cheddar. On its own, might be a bit too much. I'm enjoying it.

November 26, 2020 - Turkey Day treat. Slow decanted for 2.5 hours. Immediately upon opening, the wine tasted flat, maybe stripped. Very little character through the entire vertical. By dinner time, it was an entirely different wine - bordering on spectacular. It was still light on the nose, but on the palate it was a mix of fruit, earth, smoke, wood and anise (I would have rated it higher had it maintained the fruit better). It had a beautiful balance with the alcohol completely in check and a long tasty finish. Always a treat to drink these old burgundy village wines and have them perform so beautifully.

August 22, 2020 - This was completely different than my other bottle, really spot on. Great spice and black fruit, with a solid acid and tannin backbone. Drink if you've got it, and I hope it tastes like this. Nice pair with reverse seared herbed porcelet collar.

August 3, 2020 - Slow-oxed for about 3.5 hours before pouring the first glass and then drank over following two hours. There may be some bottle variation. Mine was lovely, especially with air. On opening, it was certainly apparent that much of the fruit had faded, but the delicate sweet red fruit and dried flower aromas that remained were really lovely. Although there was some complexity, there were not as many tertiary or savory flavors as I would have expected for a wine of this age. No real trace of sous bois or mushroom to my nose.

As others have noted, the ample acidity and unresolved tannins here make this a wine that does better with food, but that's not a weakness in my book. The winemaker intended this to be a beverage to be consumed with a meal and I found this wine to be great when paired with a nice fatty ribeye. As the evening went on, the wine picked up weight and the fruit--both on the nose and palate--seemed to awaken and intensify, evolving into a fuller and more immediate wine. It was still improving up until we reached the dregs in the bottom two and a half inches of the bottle or so.

I would make sure to give this wine time to wake up from its long slumber before deciding to pour it down the drain, and try to consume with food as the winemaker intended.

May 23, 2020 - The nose is quite nice - tertiary notes with sous bois. The palate is all acid though - an offering to the porcelain god.
